4 banger in a 4th gen?

No. Just no. Do you realize the weight difference between the Sentra and the Maxima? Its not 300lbs its more like 500-600lbs. And why in the world are you going to waste your time on a useless motor?
If you want a sentra, BUY A SENTRA. You are going to waste a lot of time and money to find out swapping in a 1.6L motor will not improve any mpgs and or performance. It will be massively more sluggish and mpgs will not change because you will be revving the ***** off it to accelerate like it use to.

alright alright lets all relax here... we have determined a 4 cylinder swap would officially be worthless... unless it were potentially a diesel, but lets not go there. I am going to seriously consider a vq35 swap though along with a 6 speed manual. Let us save this thread as an example of the rare but real stupidity that can occur on the org when someone begins to doubt the vq and its awesomeness... .

I do, which is why I would swap in the vq35 as well, but I'd also do it for the added power. The vq35 motor weighs almost the same as a vq30, yet it has 75 more hp, and was ment to move a maxima thats 500 pounds heavier then ours. Like I said in one of my last posts, I'd be willing to bet you'd get better fuel economy with a vq35 because your rpms will be much lower then with a vq30, meaning your engine isn't working nearly as hard, which results in less fuel consumption. I wouldn't do it strictly for the fuel economy, I'm just saying thats an added bonus, and I'd like a car with more power anyways, so thats why I'm considering doing it.

Id' be willing to bet that with a vq35de and 6 speed trans swap, some weight reduction (just off the top of my head I can think of 150-200 pounds I can shave off my car), a little bit of aero work, and conservative driving, you could average 30 mpg, which is almost what a sentra averages.

I GOT IT!!! Buy a motorcycle, slap a Nissan badge on it and enjoy the high MPG Honestly thought a 4 banger in a Maxima? Really buy a same year Altima. I'm sure you'll get it in the same price range if you where to sell the Maxima.

Now, you want more power but your thread was about fuel economy, so which is it?
That being said, a VQ35 6-speed installed in the light 4th gen body = a monster

If you have a VQ30 with a 6-speed vs a VQ35 and a 6-speed, and both are going 80 mph, they are both turning over at the same rpms. Therefore, the VQ30, being smaller, will get better mpg.

Ok... I want better fuel economy. Thats my main goal... BUT... if I can get better fuel economy, AND, gain some more power, that would be best. Thats why I'm considering a vq35 swap with a 6 speed manual, because it will result in better fuel economy, and a nice power boost.

@Diamond98SE, Sure stock for stock, but then you factor in weight loss, the aftermarket support, the ease of modding.... I can go on for days why I want to do a 4 banger 4th gen.....
Also the motor I planned on swapping made the same HP as a VQ30DE and a little bit less TQ and weighs 50lbs less.
But like I stated earlier... NONE are for fuel economy.

whichever motor has a better VE at the chosen cruising RPM is the motor that would get better gas mileage with all other things being equal (which is rarely the case, but in this case it could be).

I am the kind of guy to care about fuel eco, I drive 60+ miles a day in the city, so every day I'm not driving my red maxima I'm hurting, it's making me itching to just 6mt swap the white car so I can immediately see $$$$ in my pocket
My fuel economy has been affected by lightening things up, and giving the car better gearing via the 6mt w/ the 4.1 final drive and increasing the VE of the motor (intake and exhaust modifications), simple as that.
You want MPG? Copy my moves, simple as that

No VQ35 yet.

Also still wrong, S/C sure I can see that as long as you stay out of the higher revs.
but still S/C $ > 6MT $

I have driven a 1997 Max, 1997 Sentra, and 1997 altima.
If you dont want the power of the max, then get the altima. Its a nice combination of power, mpgs, size, sportiness, and reliability.
Sentra's are unrelible and too small IMO.
PLEASE, PLEASE do not attempt to put a 4cyl in a 1997 max. My god, i cant think of a bigger waste of time, effort, or money than that

Not correct. A turbo makes the motor more efficient and can boost mpg. I was getting 29mpg in my turbo'd 4th gen and got 40 mpg in my 432whp sentra.
#76
I could definitely see that, especially if was a twin turbo kit using two small blowers as opposed to one large one and if you had a high quality tuning program. Recommendations for tuning programs and/or turbo kits?

Do what you want, but a 90's civic hatch or any year TDI jetta would be a better way to go. The higher cost of the Jetta would be offset by the 50+ mpg. And they are almost free to own with 10k oil changes and nothing that really ever breaks. TDI VW's have been getting higher mileage than hybrids and (yes i'm saying it) electrics. TDI gets better fuel mileage than electric cars. Look it up.
Civic are cheap to buy, cheap to own, and if you get a wild hair, you can swap in about 100 different motors and cheap turbo kits. Check craigslist. One sold here for $800 and a buddy of mine has been driving it to work for 3 months now. 50-60mpg.

Take a jar, label it "4th gen engine swap fund", put whatever money you want to put into this project in the jar, re-label it "4th gen extra gas fund" and come out ahead...
Seriously, my 200k mile max still gets 27mpg on hwy being driven aggressively, at least first make sure yours is getting the best mpg it can and call it a day.
Comparing cars with 25mpg vs 35mpg average, the annual savings by driving the higher-MPG car are $846 based on a gas price of $3.70 per gallon and driving 20,000 miles per year. http://www.carmax.com/enus/mpg-savin...r/default.html
Also, if it's for your job, it should be tax-deductible or you should be getting some sort of stipend for all the driving from your employer.

I guess I could see it, I rarely do see cars w/ turbos getting better mpg but i guess it's another one of those human error things.
So this only boost (hahahaha pun intended) my theory of a 4 banger 4th gen.... Time to acquire me an altima motor....
