95 maxima starts and cuts off

Just bought this 95 gle auto, sumtimes it starts right up and shuts off and it keeps doing it even if i put it in gear and drive a little it will cut off, once it gets going its good. Other times it will take me to press the throttle dwn to start it. Its a check engine light on and dont kno how to pull the code, is it similar to the 3rd gen max? Please help, thinking about taking this car back

Sounds like the typical dirty TB/IACV issue. Give them a cleaning and report back.

How to get the code(s):

Listen to Chrisman! he's all over these forums.

Also though, most Autoparts stores will at the VERY least pull the codes for you and tell you what they are for. Just gotta make it to their parking lot.

Does the throttle need to come off, or just do it with the hose removed? I will try that again n see

Remove the intake, hold the plate open by pulling the throttle cable and spray the **** out of it and go to town with a tooth brush.

When was the last time your spark plugs were changed?

Did you get the codes?

It could also be the MAF. I had a MAF that was going bad and in the mornings during the winter it would start up but if I didn't press the throttle it would die. Keep in mind our IACV's can usually only take about 2 or 3 regular cleanings. By that time you need to take the plunger/piston assembly part of it out of the whole IACV and see if it still goes in and out smoothly. If you have cleaned both the IACV and the TB then its your Mass Air Flow Sensor

As far as the cleaning, IMO the TB is easy enough to take off completely and you can get the back of the butterfly plate better. The IACV is a little more difficult to take off but not what I would call difficult as a whole. Clean then both really well. Then go get some MAF cleaner and clean your MAF. It could just be dirty but more than likely you will nedd a new one. Sorry bro

Oil in the air filter housing? upstream the maf or downstream?? Aint really supposed to be any oil in there man. supposed to be clean or a lil dirty near the TB.

Clean that bish out and clean/test your Idle air control valve. Thats prolly why the CEL is on. Your IACV has crapped out.

Well i cleaned out the air duct tube thing and it was before the maf sensor. It has a small puddle of oil in it. I cleaned out the throttle body, and iac valve, and installed a new pcv valve, plus put on a new alt and a/c belt, and a new coolant temperature sensor. I found out that the fans would come on full speed as soon as i start the car and let it idle, then it would immediatly shut off, and not start back up, so i replaced all of this myself. And now she rides good and starts right up!! I havent had any prob starting or cutting off today(fingers crossed) like i had yesterday! But i got another starter jus in case this one dies on me. Thanks for everyones help!!

Your problem right there. This controls your A/F ratio (too rich or lean) and fans.
