99 Maxima - Tranny or Torque Converter?

Hi Max-E's (Maxima Enthusiasts),

I have a 99 Maxima (164K miles) that started making a rubbing/grinding noise as I accelerated, but nothing while maintaining speed. It got worse quickly (mile or two) and when I slowed and/or pulled into the driveway and stopped, the noise was constant while in any gear as long as I was in gear stopped or going slow. This is exactly what it sounds like, albeit another type of vehicle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqUYc...eature=related

Here is where I need your help, the highly recommended Transmission place I called, said straight out... It's the tranny and the TC would be screaming in neutral as well if it were bad. Because I was recommended by his friends.....$1695 if nothing major went with a 3 year warranty.

Decent price and excellent warranty... If the tranny went. But very expensive for a TC.

So, in your opinion, is it the tranny or TC? If it is the TC, should I bite the bullet and pay to get the tranny done (cost = car value)? If it is only the TC, what is a fair price for all parties concerned ($95 hourly rate is average on Long Island)?

Any guidance and input would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

Thanks Max-E's.

Regards//KP

You go to a tranny shop for a diagnosis, of course they're gonna tell you the tranny needs rebuilding.

165K is nothing for the engine, the miles can easily double on the VQ and still pull like a mother. If it is indeed the tranny, I would probably do it. It's a great price, is it for NEW or REBUILT? If rebuilt, make sure they do everything...valve body, solenoids, all that jazz. Throw in Amsoil fluid as well.

When the trans gets pulled, have them replace your RMS, you're leaking a bit of oil from the rear main seal, yes?

I didn't hear the sound clip (at work), so I don't know, but I'd imagine that you want to be CERTAIN it's your trans, becuase as you said, for the TC that's rediculous.

You'll want to replace the trans and TC as a pair. they both are gonna be full of metal and other crap after going bad. putting your contaminated TC in a new trans will trash it in short order.

Sounds to me like it's a rotating coupler vale inside the kanuter assembly.

Just kidding

Hey KP, it's Randy from over at VB.
If you do replace the trans, also consider replacing the radiator with all the fore mentioned items. They say flushing is good but not perfect. Replaced mine because it was leaking for about $100. My 2KSE auto has 260K miles and has the original trans in it for now, knock on wood.
