evap canister plugs up lines

I want to thank all who post on this site. I have a 97 i30 that i recently purchased that would not pass smog. numerous codes came up. with the help of the posts of others with similar problems, got it to pass smog!
I changed the crank sensor, changed the EVAP charcoal canister and blew out all related lines and components. then had an egr code come up. I proceeded to remove egr pipe as suggested. it was totally plugged. cleaned it and related throttle body orifices, drove for about 100 miles and got it smogged.
I would advise any with similar issues to check charcoal canister first. charcoal should NOT pour out of hole when removed. wouldnt recommend getting one from a junk yard. tried and they all had charcoal coming out.even a small amount of charcoal can trigger a fault code. EGR tube was difficult to remove, but needs to be done. seems to be a recurring problem and the photos posted by others is invaluable. keep posting no matter how insignificant.

Did you end up getting a new charcoal canister? How much did that run? I have found lots of charcoal in my EVAP lines too. I am currently running with p1400 which technically was EGR solenoid Valve malfunction.

I tracked that down to a break in the vaccum line coming from that solenoid. The little green one next to the knock sensor wires. But there is loose charcoal in the EVAP purge control valve and the Purge Cut control valve, pretty sure my own canister is shot.

You definitely need to replace the charcoal EVAP canister. As far as I know, you can only get them from a dealer. There are several different ones used on the 4th gen, but I think the one you need is part # 14950-56U17, list price $52.78, on line $39.84 + s&h.

charcoal canister

yes i did replace the charcoal canister. i believe it was $50 at o'reillys. if you have charcoal in those components, you need to take apart the valves and blow them out. the cut valve cant be taken apart, but blow air through and give it some good whacks to shake out particles. Make sure you blow out the line from the canister up to the throttle body. blow out in both directions and place finger over removed purge line as you do this.
good luck.
