If you are not fairly mechanically inclined..I would advise letting a shop do this

Leaking oil or spilling grease?
Look at the boot, if it's cracked mad you've just caught it, a boot kit gets you going again.
If its been spewing grease for a while and the cv joint is contaminated or clicking while turning, you need to replace the axle.

^THIS

Boot kit = $10.00 time consuming, messy DIY.
Axle = 80+ DIY

If you need to have a mechanic do it, get the whole axle done as the labor for the boot will be astronomical.

I just had the car up on the rack for wheel alignment following installation of new front struts and the mechanic noticed the grease that was thrown onto the tire. I didn't have a lot of time to look further into it but will jack the front up and see if the boot is torn or was knocked off during installation of the shock/struts. If it's not torn can I simply repack with grease and push it back onto whatever ledge it came from?

The other side of the issue is the driver's side spring pops as it twists in the upper mounting when the wheels are turned left and right. I'm surprised as these are complete, new units and were simply bolt on struts. Some days you simply can't get a break.
