Read this guide an go from there. You can reuse the same tranny wheather manual or auto.
You could get an engine from a junk yard for no more than 600 n go from there

Look on www.car-part.com
They have decent prices for transmissons and engine...depending on mileage you want...if youre in no rush you could buy a mid mileage engine and do a small recondition on it and be good to go...a swap can be done under 2k easily if doing it yourself....depends on labor and price youre willing to pay....

600 is a good price, I wouldn't expect to see them priced below that regularly and they could easily go above that price depending on mileage so its not very accurate to say they go for no more then 600.00. Then once you add parts and fluids the swap would easily run over a grand and closer to 1500. Of course if you have to add labor that's going to go up even more.

And you know this for a fact?

Here is my swap pricing to give you an idea
engine..................$800
resurface flywheel....$40
new clutch.............$120
cam adapters...........$90
Pathy TB.................$125
adapter plate for PTB. $125
fluids/Hoses.......................$120-150?
The thrill of driving a 4DSC......Priceless.
Not to mention if you do break anything or mistakes you make (which I did)...
Was it all worth it. YES. Also you may/may not have to deal with emissions. Thats a whole other story/thread lol...

Simple sell your ride, add the $1500-$2000 for the swap to the price you receive for the sale, and just get a 5.5 Gen. Much less headache in the long run with parts, fitting/fab issues, and the best part you can pass emissions on day one.
Then the only thing you have to worry about is what to do with all that spare time you have not rooting around in the junk yard bustin your knuckles
seriously though, a 2003 Max is a 9 year old car, it's not going to be that hard to find one ready to go for the difference of selling your car + the cost of a quality 3.5 + Tranny swap.

So true man. Up here in Mass, if u cant get the CEL off/fixed, then it AINT worth the headache.
there are NO 2003 maximas in the junkyard. Hell, you wd be hard pressed to find 2003 anything in the yard. Im pretty sure the reason why is political.

What I also think you fail to see is that if the OP is anything like most of us on here is that he would skip the swap and get a 5.5. Then that itch will come back and the modding will happen again and the 3.5 or maybe even 3.7 swap will be back on the brain. So why not do the swap on the car you already have and be happy.

i received a quote for 2-2500 labor and parts inclusive. the shop said milage can range bt 20k-100k..i tried selling my ride and i was getting less than 2k for it.i highly doubt i can find a 5.5 for 4500 less than 100k mi with mods. i'm just debating if i should go ahead and proceed with the swap. i start grad school in the fall, my total commute is going to be about 1000 miles a month. ill be stuck there for about 2 years. my 4th gen (auto) has about 138-9k on the clock. i do notice that it slams 1st into 2nd gear kind of hard tho.

so anyone know how much work would cost to swap 3.5 into a 5 spd?... $1k for an engine in my area and someone else does the timing, swapping etc

I'm sure there will inevitably be problems after a swap and since your school is around the corner I'd suggest putting this project on hold so you have one less thing to worry about. Having to fix your car every week or month is a huge pain in the midst of a school year, trust me.

Oh cool, having a faulty MAF doesnt sound too bad after a swap but car problems are annoying. I had finished my header and y-pipe swap in the winter then I went back to school. My brother drives the car when I'm away, so he was upset when ALL the exhaust gaskets went bad, and the exhaust itself. Since they don't attempt to do the work like I do, they were always at the shop and putting some heat on me. Bottom line, do the mods when it's appropriate. I hold off everything until the summer when I can fulfill my responsibility of taking care of the car, going through with mods so I can anticipate the worst
OP I suggest being patient, if you want to do the 3.5 you don't have to do it RIGHT NOW. I'm telling you, you don't want to deal with a broken car while in school. I was stressed

If you can, plan ahead of time and try to do it yourself. Trust me... It is much more rewarding to point at your engine and say !!I did that!!
I did mine during school and it was distracting and stressful so take your time, get some nice parts/tools together and get some of your buddies who know about cars to help you out!
Im sure you have friends who are mechanically inclined who would be glad to give you a hand....
