Starting issue that confuses me

I have a 95 Max 5-speed with 62K miles and a starting issue that I cannot get my finger on. When I go to start my car, sometimes it will take several turns to kick, even sounding like a car with a nearly dead battery when it finally starts at times. Some times, I have to give the pedal a push and then it turns over. Other times, it starts just fine, no issues whatsoever. I've replaced the fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, plugs, run codes = none. On my last Max, I had a similar issue where the mechanic fixed it and IIRC mentioned having had to replace something like a fuel check valve or something similar (NOT FPR) referring to keeping fuel from back-flowing to the tank - still not the FPR. I've tried my best in what free time I have to locate what it could be. I am a total DIY guy and don't want to take it to the shop unless completely out of options. I'm not sure what the issue really could be and would greatly like any advice or pointers to where to find better possible solutions. Thanks to all in advance for your help.

FYI - No sarcastic/OMG just search it comments appreciated. Like I haven't searched what I could and/or have enough free time to read all of every single "trouble starting/no start" post out there.

Try going to autozone and getting your charging system checked (battery, alternator, charger)

MIght Help

My 99 SE was doing almost exactly the same thing. I was thinking it was the starter or wires going to it. But a friend that had a 98 maxima told me to take a 4 gauge wire, run it from my negative battery terminal to one the open bolt holes on the side of the tranny after i sanded the area around the bolt hole. Fixed my problem. Car fires up right away every time. Might not be your problem though

It sounds like starter. Mine went out a couple days ago... My first suspect was battery since my friend gave me a jump and it started but after checking battery it ended up being fine and the guy at autozone told me it is the starter. He was right...

Just check your starting components, fuses, etc all that jazz... Im pretty sure if you searched you would have found something on this topic... Just saying

I agree. I've had starters go out before and I've seen them on the verge of going out. Yours sounds like it's getting ready to take a crap. Definitely get it tested along with the rest of your charging system, just in case.

First of all - there are 247 different "starting trouble," 248 "issue starting" and 247 "starting problem" posts in the 4th Gen section alone. I have a life outside of the digital world that does not afford me the ability to thumb through every single one of them. After browsing through too many and not being able to deduce a possible solution, (partly because of different issues and other because of too many useless comments that elongate the thread w/o being helpful in any way, shape, or form ^) I decided to ask for the help of those that may be familiar with my particular situation. It's called efficiency, not laziness.

Second - Thanks to those offering on the starter advice. I've had them go out on me before, but never in this way. Especially since on the rough starts, even though it cranks over just fine, sometimes it's after I stop cranking it that the engine kind of 'sputters' to life. It honestly didn't even cross my mind that it would be that. Getting it checked out pronto.

Finally - I would rather attempt to build a parachute from scratch AFTER jumping out of the plane, before even thinking about owning a Honda!

if it cranks over just fine it is not your starter. If it cranks slow like a dead battery and the battery is good it could be the starter or corroded terminals, corrosion in the battery cables. You would need to do a resistance check on the cables to know.Good luck
