Flooded maxima, need advice

I have a 98 gxe and about a month and a half ago, there was a flash flood and my car got stalled in deep water.
The water reached just under the steering wheel. My mechanic told me to let it go when i spoke to him after the accident. So, i let it sit for a while and this week my mech checked it out, he put in a new starter, ecu and battery.

I was told that the engine was running really rough and doesnt stay on for long, my mechanic told me to junk the car. I am thinking about a DEK swap, do you think the car would have problems down the line die to the water???
Should I go with the DEK swap?

All advice would be appreciated, i'm really bummed out, especially when i see other maximas on the road now

**** DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT BELOW, PLEASE READ ******

THE SHAME OF BAYONNE

There was a flash flood that day, having moved to Bayonne only last year, i wasn't totally familiar with the town and
didn't know that the street I turned into floods real deep. I turned into the street and I was arguing with my Mom, who was in the passenger seat, and I was looking straight ahead but just not on the road, a few feet later I saw that it was flooded and I
didn't realize how deep it was and i made the fateful misjudgment of thinking that I could drive through it. A stupid
misjudgment, I still can't believe I didn't back out of that street. Hindsight makes fools of us all.
The car stalled and the water started seeping in through the bottom of the doors, really slowly though.

I just climbed out of the window, not wanting to open the door but my Mom couldn't, at her age. I had to open
the door for her and that was the end of my car, a fatal deluge.

I'm relating the details of this misadventure to bring attention to the appalling treatment of the Bayonne Police that
showed up. Pardon my use of the word pig, but the animals that showed up that day were nothing more in any terms.
The pig that showed up, without asking me if I or my mother was ok, bluntly and derisively asked "You didn't see the water"?
His partner pig, also did not inquire about our well-being, just telling me to get out of there as the tow truck wouldn't
be able to tow the car out until the water had drained, which would've taken half an hour or so. So, I helped my arthritic
mom out of there with no offer of help from either PIG.

I called a cab to send my mom home as I waited for the water to drain from the street, as AAA wouldn't even send
a tow truck until the water had completely drained from the street. I asked the PIG if i could get a ride home, so i could
change clothes and come back as i was freezing in the soaking clothes. The PIG bluntly replied "Not after what you just did."
Obviously, these pigs were intolerably inconvenienced to be mobilized from their Dunkin Donut parking lot idling.
Not surprisingly, all three farm animals were overweight. Paunchy Pigs, aren't they all?

So, i stood there and called AAA in front of one pig, who had his cruiser parked in the street to stop incoming traffic,
AAA advised me that they will not send a tow truck until the water was completely drained and i was asked to call back once
it had. So, i shared this with the pig, and i told him that I would go home and return promptly after a change of clothes, I live
8 blocks from where the car stalled. I get home as fast as i can, and double back; Lo and behold, my car is gone and all the
pigs are gone!!!! They towed my ****ing car!!

I called the Bayonne Police (Bayonne Pig Farm) the next morning, and i ask them why my car was towed when i told the attending pig that I would have AAA tow my car, the PIG on the phone kept screaming repeatedly "You left your car", "You left your car", "You left your car", "You left your car", until i was forced to stop speaking. I realized that on the other end of the phone was a wild boar endowed with the faculty of speech, who did not possess any decency or etiquette to talk with human beings in a civilized manner. I gave up my inquiry and asked when and where i can pick up my car. It was towed to a body shop nearby, i got there and the front bumper was dented.
They charged me $200 for the tow, even though i had made it very lucid that, I WILL HAVE AAA TOW MY CAR!!!
Insult to injury.

Their actions made it very clear that day, that I would have been treated better if the color of my skin was lighter or white- ideally. It was disgusting for them to treat a law abiding, tax paying resident in such an
abhorrent way. I'm really hoping i'll get a call soon from the dept. asking me to buy their shields and other **** you're asked to
buy for their fund raising. I've never hesitated to buy that stuff in the past. Never again- Ever.

junk the car IMHO....water that high in the car means you had some major electrical components get submerged, as well as the possiblity of water still standing under your carpet

The repairs/parts that would be needed to restore everything..would likely cost more than the car is worth. Plus car cancer (rust) has possibly set in

He said that he took the plugs out, he saw water in one cylinder, didnt do an oil change though, i wonder if the IACV has water in it, wonder if the engine running rough would have anythin to do with that, or possiblly water in the gas tank, isn't that sealed though??

Just under the steering wheel filled with water? That means the whole tranny was submerged. I know I love my car to death but at this point, I honestly must say leave it in hot weather for over a week and see what happens. If nothing, honestly, let it go...

The engine sounds like its good. Get all water out of that one cylinder and do an oil change, remove all electrical sensors and remove all water and put back together. It should work.

Take it home, park it in the sun, take all of the spark plugs out(simple DIY), turn the key crank the motor over, install new plugs (copper ngk's), change the oil, see how it runs. Things need to dry out. Everything is wet with that much water. It might be fine, it might not be. It's hard to tell. I'm just guessing.

Did your insurance pay you off for the car? If so just buy another one then do your swap. When all those electrons start corroding who knows what'll happen next, besides that car is going to smell really bad.

Flood damage cars almost always have problems later down the road. With that much water in the car, corrosion of the wiring connectors and other things will happen. The only way around that is to strip down the interior of the car replace the main wiring harness and all the other harnesses attached to it, which can get expensive. That's why insurance companies total out flooded cars.

You have the 2.0l spi in the escort. They have valve seat problems. I think it's from heating and cooling over time allowing it to drop and ruin a perfect motor. Those engines are strong otherwise. The spi head installed on the older 1.9l motor makes good compression for turbo. Back in the day there were turbo escorts, probes, thunderbirds and you can take that turbo manifold off a old 1.8 and you can make a hynrid turbo from the thunderbird and probe turbos. Car's light and fun.

There's only 2 kind of cars I would never buy even as a parts car. One of them is a flood car the other is any car that had a deceased person in it.

Dang you know a lot about my FORD (Found On Road Dead)
I definitely aint turboing this car, it's a decent car, just a bit hard on the eyes. Eating a bit more gas than i would expect from a 4-banger, will replace the O2's and do some maintennace soon.

As long as there arent any remains of the dead person still in the car- like blood stains or brain matter i dont see why not.

I've done dozens of flood damage repairs at the detail shop we ran. Anything higher than the bottom of the seats and the body shops would usually total the cars. Otherwise they would bring them to us to do the work and take their cut from the insurance check. I had a young guy bring in a newer Vette that he left parked on the beach. The tide came in flooding the car with saltwater almost to the top of the tranny tunnel. I was amazed the thing was even still running. When he asked me what he should do with it, I told him "either trade it in TODAY or call your insurance and be ready to take the hit". Flood damage is bad enough but to have it occur with saltwater is game over. You could already see corrosion forming on the door hinges and on any pins in the electrical plugs that I pulled.

In my ten years at that shop we had a few calls on cars that were biohazard cleanups. One in particular I remember was when a worker had blew his brains out in a company van. Apparently, he was parked on an upward incline and when he did the deed he slumped over between the 2 seats, letting everything drain out and run all the way to the back of the van. The company owner explained to me that they had just got the van back from the police impound lot where it had sat for 2 months in the summer. I politely explained that the work was beyond the scope of what we do and referred them to a crime scene cleanup company.

I watched another guy with a bit stronger of a stomach than me take in an Audi with brain matter splattered all over the headliner. A bottle of scotch and a few hours later, you would never know what had happened in the car.

Lol. I don't know why anyone would bring a car in which someone
died violently to be detailed anyway? That's just plain wrong.

Now, i'm not pulling the race card, but their actions made it very clear that day.
I would have been treated better if the color of my skin was lighter or white- ideally.
If you or someone you know is in the Bayonne Police Dept., shame on you to treat a law abiding, tax paying resident in such an
abhorrent way. I'm really hoping i'll get a call soon from the dept. asking me to buy their shields and other **** you're asked to
buy for their fund raising. I've never hesitated to buy that stuff in the past. Never again- Ever.
I can tell from your post that you are a very cool and collected person with not an ounce of hate, prejudice, or racism in his heart. Does Bayonne PD not have any black, mexican, asian, peurto rican, etc officers. What if they werent white. And remeber I didnt bring the race thing up.

I can only surmise that they were put off by something when they arrived, possibly someones attitude and maybe an accusation that they were responsible for not already blocking traffic.
IDK, but I have a hard time believing they were that rotten for no reason. I guess I want to think the best of people, unfortunately that story gave me a pretty clear look into your predisposition.

IDK, but I have a hard time believing they were that rotten for no reason. I guess I want to think the best of people, unfortunately that story gave me a pretty clear look into your predisposition.
I related the incident exactly as it happened. I am a mild mannered person and i showed incredible poise and restraint in the face of such obnoxious treatment that day. My brother was incredulous when i related it to him, he was telling me what he would have done if he was in my place. I'm sure anyone else in my place would've put those pigs in their place. Maybe i was just stunned by it all, disoriented into inaction.

To address your point, i'm sure the dept. has black, mexican, asian, peurto ricans employed, but all three that showed up that day were neither of the aforementioned. I had no attitude and I did not accuse anyone of anything, in fact i was embarrassed that I put my mom through that ordeal, and i was embarrassed as some people passing by even heckled me. The pigs had no reason to be "put off" by anything.
Do your fu ck1ng job, and all they did after arriving there was stand around and watch as i got out of the car and waded out of there.

I am predisposed to longanimity as my actions showed that day.
It pains me to look at my driveway everyday and see such an unequal replacement parked where my max used to be, a loss made more poignant and stinging by the circumstances surrounding it.

The road was under a bridge and it was rain water, i don't think it had salt, dunno. There was pigeon poop under the bridge there, it was all washed into the pooled water there, and that carries over 60 different diseases, so my brother was like don't risk it, get rid of it.

These cars are a dime a dozen and they are cheaper than ever now.
On the way to work everyday, i see a parked 4th gen, it is completely loaded with everything and in immaculate condition- inside and out, it's probably low miles too and a rare color.

I will ride one again, all in good time.

Didn't want to clutter the board with another post, so i will recycle this one with a new question:

I searched to find out where the vin is on the engine itself and found out that
"it is engraved on the cylinder #1 piston wall"

Can someone please tell me where that is exactly if i'm looking at the engine, standing in front of it. Is it hard to see?
