question about the mode motor, and auto climate control.

so my boy just bought a 97 maxima that needs a little work. one of the problems was that the vents only blew air outta the defogger up top, it wouldnt switch to anything else. so we figured it was the mode motor.

so we get down there and undo the motor, and its not plugged in to anything. there is literally no wire plug down there to plug into it. its confusing the **** out of us. there is also a black wire socket in that area that is clipped down in the general area of the mode motor.(as if maybe a wire harness plugs into the black plug, and then into the mode motor?)
that has to be the answer, because if not i dont see where this wire could be?

also to add the confusion, his auto climate control does not match up with mine or my other boys 97. it looks like its the 98-99, which could be why the wiring is completely missing for the mode motor.

any ideas? similar stories?

im thinking the only explanation is someone replaced stuff with the wrong years stuff, leaving the stock mode motor still in place with no wiring attached to it.

I think that sums it up right there. Someone frankensteined that auto climate control. The 98-99 are different from the 95-97. Vastly different systems.

i believe he needs to replace his climate control with a real 97s, and replace the center console wiring. the Bermuda Triangle exists inside this center console.

To people whove replaced the entire center console on a 97:

is there any way someone swapped just the wiring for the climate control? or does it look like hes probably going to have to replace the entire wiring assembly behind the center console, since it looks to be the wrong year.

Doubtful that the wiring was replaced. Just get a 95-97 auto climate control unit. It should plug right in. The 95-97 and the 98-99 unit both have 2 plugs, but the 98-99 unit has more wires as well as bigger and different shaped plugs compared to the 95-97 units.

right, i know what youre saying, replace the unit. he has to do that, but were trying to work out how hes going to get his mode motor working without replacing the entire wiring. because there is literally no plug in there to plug into the mode motor at all. it was screwed into place to do its job, but without any way to power it.

and the car has definitely been into an accident, but has a clean carfax.

so im thinking the airbags went off and they replaced dash pieces along with wiring, and thats what caused this cluster****? thats the only thing i can think of.

Airbags being set off would show on the carfax. As well as salvage the title(at least in az) unless the damages weren't reported and the repairs were a DIY.

thats my point, that its got a clean carfax, but weve found a "repaired" kink in the left fender rail under the fender. so obviously the repairs were DIY. which is what im afraid of as far as damage control.

I'd say cut your losses and let this car go. This car has electrical nightmare written all over it.

i wouldnt go that far. everything else is in pretty good working order. i do body work and were going into this car knowing that it needs work. but at most it needs a full wire swap and climate control unit. just a buncha work really. it looks like all the internals and stuff are still 97.

aaaaaaaaand bump!!

cars not an electrical nightmare. this is the only major problem besides maybe having to replace some structural parts later on down the road. weve tested everything else and there isnt a single other problem. no problem starting, no idle problems, mafs good and suckin, all the door electronics work, radio works speakers work. its just this one ****in thing.

were gonna try a full wire swap and climate control display. will update from there

that was awesome! whole dash is out. all wires are out. they are definitely different. im just hoping his 99 whitefaced gauge cluster will plug straight into the 97 and below center wiring.

tomorrow, install correct wires! didnt take pics but will take tomorroww
