Pricing Question?
Pricing Question?
I recently got a quote for $500 from a guy to replace my O2 Sensors, the EGR Valve, and the rear valve cover gasket. Does this seem like a fair price or is he charging to much for the work i want done? If anyone has had this type of work done before please let me know what you paid, and if not, what a good price should be.
O2 sensors are a breeze, simply disconnect the plugs in the engine bay, and crawl under the car to unscrew them out of the y-pipe and cat or wherever they go
Dunno about the others, but seem okay to me

Thanks for the advice on the O2 sensors i didn't think it was that easy! Will probably be doing them myself then...No other parts are involved with that fix right?
@ Andrewmac; That was parts and labor he said, so if i don't fix it myself then i should definitely take it back to him?

Well, I would have a few more questions.. like why are these being replaced? I can only imagine he's pinpointed the parts that actually need to be replaced VS the parts that can be cleaned/reused.
I should have been more specific with my reply but o2 sensors are ~$80 a pop, EGR valve ~$150 if I remember correctly and valve cover is over $100. So with those rough numbers if he replaced all 4 sensors that's $320 + $150 + $100 = $570.00. So he's already exceeded the price in parts.
So either it's a fantastic price or he isn't actually replacing all those parts and instead is charging you $500 to *fix* the problems you're having with the O2 sensors, EGR valve, and valve cover.

Sorry should have told you about the codes that came up when i had it checked first ha...thats why i know its the sensors and thats what i told him...also he is not changing the rings or anything just the main seal that goes around the edge. Not to knock your price on the EGR valve but rockauto has them for $80...i also should have been more specific on the fact that he will just be changing out two of the sensors as only two came up on the diagnostic thing. Or would it be better to go ahead and do all four?
No need to do all four. If two are bad, replace two.
The answer to your original question really boils down to how comfortable you are with the car and whether or not you want to do the work yourself. If $500 isn't going to break the bank, and you want these issues fixed fast and professionally ( assuming this guy can provide that ) then screw it, pay for it and get it done. Me personally, I couldn't pay labour costs on that work. O2 sensors are, as stated above, extremely simple to change. EGR and rear valve cover are a bit more involved but if you do both at the same time it should be an afternoon and a few beers.
