Antenna grinding noise

My 98 Max, when I turn off the radio, there is a loud grinding noise from the antenna even after the mast has gone down completely.

Been awhile since I coated the mast with dry graphite, read that somewhere, but even after that, the same grinding remains.

A search here only returned these comments?

Perhaps need to change mast a new one for $5?

Yes, the last couple of teeth are worn off the rope gear and the motor continues spinning because it does not sense the normal resistance required to shut it off.

I have the same problem withmine, except the motor doesn't continue after the mast is fully down. But it is a pretty irritating sound. anyway to fix it? I spayed a lot of oil on it but that didn't seem to work.

$74 for mast from the dealer.

Is it difficult to get one off a max in junk yard?

Don't bother with used on this, the rope gear gets brittle and comes apart over time. This has worked for me for the last 2 years.

Why would you install that? He just needs a mast, and that looks like an aftermarket POS.

Wow, delivered to north of the border in just 7 days.

The Haines manual recommends two people to change mast.
True?

They just don't like you. Replaced mine two weeks ago and it was $36 from dealer.

Pretty much, yeah. You need one person to feed the new mast down into the antenna while the other turns the radio off. It can take you a few tries to get the teeth lined up right.

Mine was this easy. You don't need two people. Remove the nut with needle- nosed pliers inserted into the slots. Turn the ignition and radio on and run back there to pull. After the old one is removed, turn the ignition off and the antenna motor will reverse. It will run indefinitly so you have plenty of time to insert the rope gear, guiding the outer sleeve of the new mast into its hole, then replace the nut.

Unfortunately, it's not always this easy. Much depends on where/how the nylon part breaks inside the motor housing. On mine, there were multiple broken pieces, so everything would not feed up the hole. I ended up having to take out the whole assembly and disassemble it so I could clean out all the broken pieces.

Reading from the Antennamastsrus.com site, if it currently grinds after the old mast goes down, I push it, the guide that holds the cable next to the gear is bad.

OK the old mast wouldn't come out when I powered the radio, so I took out the whole assembly opened it up and uncoil the chain and the trouble is I still can't extract the old mast from the assembly.

Keep trying?

I went to a local auto parts store and they have generic antenna with cable connector thereby bypassing the power motor. But looks like its round shape not compatible with the oval opening on the fender.

Suggestions are welcome at this point.

Is the mast still coming out partially? What you have to do is throw in some penetrating oil and then use a vise grip in good condition and grab it right two inches away from fender and pull very hard.

well it snapped about 1/2" from the base, no grip at all.

The E2 antenna available at local shops seems poor fit.

Found this stubby at http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...#ht_500wt_1414

not sure it includes wiring.

The junk yard is another option.

The nissan commector is like a cat5 wire connector for a PC. Is there an adapter to the universal antenna connector?

I didn't plan, all I wanted was a functional antenna, the easiest solution was disconnect the power motor.

Now I can't put the antenna back in place. This black cover is not designed to fit in the silver receptacle.

I butts the lip in the interior.

Duh, the silver part goes under the fender, only the black piece with the antenna, what's left of it.
