Engine Ping/Thump.

I did a tune up on my 96 max about a month ago and noticed some bad pinging while in D at a stop. I changed the spark plugs fuel filter air filter oil and oil filter blah blah.. i noticed when i was on the last plug that the coil has a small amount of oil on it. i cleaned it off replaced the plug and my car was running great. the next day is when i first noticed the "thump". everyday since then its gotten worse. any ideas? i already searched for ever and still cant find anything.
No check engine light either.... also i cleaned out my tb. help please i want my max back
oh also i realized it only does it while in gear . when its in park it doesnt ?

Check for codes, even though you don't have a CEL.

Does it "thump" now, at the same times /places it used to ping? Describe the thump...at speed/rpm? do you hear it or feel it?

which plugs specifically did you use when you changed 'em?

Oil in sparkplug tube is due to leaking tube top seal. I have two tubes with oil in them on the back bank. Finally pulled the valve cover and replaced them. Oil in sparkplug tube doesn't hurt anything.

It didn't do it before i changed the spark plugs. its more of a thump/tug and only does it under 1000rpm . i used autolite double platinum. im wondering if it has to do with the spark plugs because thats when it started. i will post a video to give better detail

YES.

Go to NGK platinum this time. Our cars like NGK plugs.

If it didn't do it BEFORE the plug change, then undo that action and try again.

Rule of thumb for spark plugs with our cars is simple,

NGK or bust!!

Now which ones you choose to run is different (coppers/platinum/irridium)

yes...and to expand on that:

Platinum is OEM, will last a long time (60-100K) before needing replacement

Copper ignites slightly hotter, but lasts only 20-30K

Iridium is overkill for standard VQ motors.

This is not accurate. Hot oil breaks down the rubber coil boot and will cause arcing and a miss on that cylinder.

yeah...KS should not be relevant to your current issue.

i just checked the last spark plug located in the rear passenger side and it was drenched in oil. i cleaned out all the oil in the bank and replaced it with a new spark plug. no change. could it be the coil? thanks!

Wrap the rubber boot with electrical tape for testing purposes and see if it doesnt run better. New boots are available, front and rear are different.
