Insurance considers a car totaled if the damage/repair costs are over half of the car's value. My guess would be it's totaled, but some other 4th gen members are prolly gonna chime in.

That sucks to see/hear about, sorry that happened. Is your neck messed up? i.e. whiplash, muscles "guarding", etc?

Yeah uhhh pretty much anything will total a 4th gen these days.... even if the repairs aren't half of the vehicles value... sourcing the parts are impossible aka pretty much TOTALED!

We brought one w/ rear bumper cover only damage w/ 133k miles auto.... totalled.

it's not half of the car's value. it depends on the insurance company. for some it's as high as 80 percent.

other than probably the roof, thats one of the most expensive parts to fix. front end can all be bolted on (assuming no frame damage) and that will all have to be cut chopped and rebuilt... I honestly would be surprised to find a shop willing to do it lol

Save what you can and swap it into another 4th gen. 99% of you wouldn't do that but you asked. Looked clean.

 

There's no way that isn't totaled. Take the money and get another 4th gen with less miles and move over the parts that are salvageable if you've modded it

 

Chop the broken rear half off, weld on a good rear half = problem solved

I've never been involved in a totalled insurance claim but is it possible to get them to "write it off" and still let you keep the junk pile? I'm sure there's a ton of great parts in there that are undamaged.

The three grand or so I get for it will go towards a down payment on a used 335i. Just got back from the dealer and they have a nice one for sale. 300 lb ft of torque from 1400 - 5000 rpm.

Physically I'm fine, but I am a bit disappointed. I puts lot of blood and sweat into that car. It's a fun hobby, but it surely doesn't pay off when something like this happens.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

its not just a question of replacing both quarterpanels, decklid, all rear unibody panels, taillight sockets, tailights, bumper support, bumper support brackets, bumper cover, and rear w/s. but with an impact like that i bet theres a kink in the rails probly all the way up in the cabin.

Well the verdict is is: total loss. The adjuster needs to value the car but I'll check NADA and KBB and get a value for myself before she calls me back.

I must say, I really liked this car. I'm just kind of glad this didn't happen after I put the new engine in. Unfortunately the FWD platform is just not what I see myself in long term, but that may change once I have kids. I will always have a favorable view of Nissan; after owning four of them I can say they are well built cars with an emphasis on reliability.

I do plan on continuing to be a part of the Maxima community. I'm working on forming a company right now with the intention of doing some electronics consulting work on the side. After working with Darren on his 2009 VQ35 swap, I've found that I really enjoy helping people make their projects a reality.

Thanks, everyone, for the concern for my personal well being. Keep your seat belts tight against your chest, it makes all the difference. My girlfriend had her seat back slightly reclined so there was a gap between her cheat and the belt, and as a consequence so got tossed around a bit after the impact. Fortunately the seat belt caught her, but it bruised her ribs in doing so. Make no mistake, that seat belt probably saved her life, or at the least kept her from more serious injury, but if it was tight against her chest like mine was, there would not have been any injury sustained.

True story. You can absolutely tell the rear of the car sacrificed itself in order to maintain the shape of the passenger compartment. Honestly I'm more than pleased because I walked away from a pretty bad accident.

And yeah the car is totaled, but when I bought that car my financial situation was much different than it is today. So it's time for an upgrade. Just at the beginning of August my ABS light came on and I got to thinking that this is an great car, but it has passed it's prime. I was contemplating buying a 335 before the accident even.
