P0500 another problem / where to start.

Hello.

After spending almost $1k in 6 weeks fixing my 99 maxima (both control arms, ball joints, both wheel bearings w/ hubs, tie rods and ofcourse replacing old and rusted y-pipe). Suddenly CEL showed yp. Drove to Autozone and they gave me code P0500 which is VSS. I've been reading some threads regarding that code but most people complain about not working speedo. Mine is working fine. Test drove my car with cruise ON and its working. Unfortunately I do not have osciloscope to test sensor like FSM says, but is there any other way to check if sensor is fine. What could be other problem? BTW. Car is 5 spd manual.

Thnx

If your speedo is working but ECM register P0500, then check the signal wire from speedo to ECM.

I will check if I can get any voltage reading from pin that goes from cluster to ECM. Is is 5.2V?

I have a 96 automatic and was having the same code on and off for over a year. My speedo worked fine. I replaced the VSS and the problem would stll reappear at random times. I would clear the code and then go anywhere from one day to two weeks before it would reappear. I read on this forum about removing the speedo and tighten the phillip screws on the back of the speedo. it has now been over two months and no code. Keeping fingers crossed

Ok. So just checked pin 29 on ecu connector and it receives electric signal. I used regular voltmeter and value was jumping between 1.9 and 5.2 volts. Any idea whats next step?

Try Seagurll's suggestion and look at pin 29 with a scope to see if you get a consistent square wave.
