Passenger airbag panel

Hi guys,
A quick question. I recently bought a 4th gen. The interior is in excellent condition (grey leather) except for the panel that covers the passenger side airbag. It appears to be black plastic that has been painted grey and the paint has deteriorated badly (sticky and faded) showing the black underneath. The car has probably seen a fair bit of sun as the exterior paint is a bit faded.

My first thought is that the car has been in an accident (front end has been resprayed) and had the airbag replaced with a second hand one from a black interior car, which has then been painted poorly. A mechanic I asked reckons it is normal for these types of parts to be produced in one colour and then painted by the factory to match individual interior colours.

Has anyone else had this happen to their non-black interior?

Thanks,
Mark

The paint from my passenger air bag stripped after I sprayed some dash board cleaner on it, and yes the color beneath is black. My car was never in a front accident so It's possible they do paint them to match the color of the cars

why won't you just get a used airbag that matches your dash in good condition? airbags for the 4th gen can be had for under $50 each.

Unfortunately these are not that common where I am (Australia) but I am trying to find a replacement from a wrecker locally. I'm not sure if they are the same for Left and Right hand drive car but even if they are i'm guessing that there may be issues with posting something like this from the US to Australia.
