i bought this car and it was an auto. needed a tranny. so i bought a 5speed swap. tranny, mount and shift linkage all came from the same person( same year max i have at least thats wat he told me and was being parted out in his driveway) i bought a shifter online new. i put it all in and it drives nice but the shifter is to far forward. when i put it in 1st, 3rd, 5th its hitting the shift bezzel. and idk why. i turned the shifter aroudn and its still doing the same thing. can anyone help i got some pics but i couldnt get real good ones my camara blows

I know you said all parts came from the same car, but this would happen if that trans happensto be a 5th gen trans. in a 4th gen the 5th gen trans will cause the shifter to sit about 1" further forward, very close to or even possibly contacting the bezel. the difference is actually the shift yoke that is attached with a roll pin to the striking rod. if that is indeed what is going on, you can change that yoke out if you really feel like it. not too hard and sounds like you could definitely handle it if you did the 5spd swap yourself.

or maybe it's just a problem with the shifter you bought, aftermarket shifters will often change the shifter position.

the trans came from a 1997 maxima. but wat u said about the shifter dose make sence. i was thinking about cutting the shift rod that goes to the tranny and shorten it about an inch and welding it back together.(as i m a welder.) but it would be easyer if there was another way. any suggestions on were i should start first. its cold as hell here right now for the winter so ima only do so much till the summer come. i plan on puttin a 3.5 swap and possibly a turbo with it or maybe just 3.5 or maybe 3.0 turbo idk yet and i m not sure wat i plan on doing with the tranny. rebuilding it or puttin 6 speed tranny in. let me no thanks man.

It's the shifter. I was running pacesetter but recently moved onto a twm. Pacesetter was perfect. Smooth and no issues. Twm, the shifter is now about an inch forward and I hit the bezel in third and fifth....Not to mention notchy shifts..

FWIW, when I installed a 5th gen trans the shifter moved back, away from the radio.
My Pacesetter shifter sits perfect (in reach) now, but it never hit the trim in the first place.

I've installed a few other aftermarket shifters and they all moved forward. Not impressed with any of them, including B&M.

i must've been remembering it backwards then. been a long time since i put a 5th gen trans in my 4th gen, but it makes sense now.

5th gen trans moves the shifter back, and short shifter moves it forward.
