Interested in wider tire

I just got a pre-owned 98 Maxima SE. The stock tires are 215/55 16. However, I would like to have wider tires to increase handling. I would like to know what the maximum ammount size of the tire i am able to go without changing rims. I was thinking of using 225/55 16. Is that too big? Your responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM PUTTING ON 225/55/16
I USED TO HAVE CONCEPT NEEPER 17in RIMS AND THEY CAME WITH 215/45/17 AND WHEN I REPLACED THEM, I PUT 235/45/17 AND THE GUY HAD SAID I COULD GO BIGGER. THEY NEVER GAVE ME ANY PROBLEMS.

Tire Recommendation
I've got 225's on my 98 SE rims, with no problems. You should be aware that by changing the width/aspect ratio you are liable to induce some speedometer error though! A small percentage admittedy....
I bought Michelin Pilot HX 225/50ZR16's. These tires kick serious #%&! After scraping clean the stock Goodyear RS-A's in 20k miles I spent a good deal of time researching possible replacements. The Pirelli P6000's were considered, but the consensus seemed to be that with my driving style (banzai!) their treadlife would be really short. The Michelins have help up well and constitute a considerable increase in grip. A buddy of mine with the Toyo noticed real improvements over his almost identical 98 5spd. Enjoy....

I'd go against it....
I just got some SP5000's in 225/50 16 on stock 6.5" rims. I don't like the lateral feel of it inflated to 32 psi. Inflated higher, and the car gets really loose.
My advice is to find a tire in the stock size for the 6.5" rims. Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE the SP5000's grip, I just am not keen on the extra play in the steering due to the wider tire.

Either 225/55/16 or 225/50/16 would work fine. The handling will be a bit sharper with the 50 series, the ride more cushy with the 55 series.
Take your pick. I recommend Dunlop SP5000 tires. A bunch of us here have them and they are fantastic. Great grip and wet weather traction.
