Transmission automatic

1988 automatic transmission gears will not engage appears pinkish red in transmission and a buddy know where to go from here.? Will not engage reverse drive on any other gear. Happened: accelerated onto the freeway then all of a sudden felt like car went into neutral. But the case. The gears will not engage for reverse or drive. Advise?

Any noise before the neutral like charcteristics? Sounds like some splines stripped or a shaft sheared.....Maybe you got low on fliud and it failed since you said it was pink that sounds like air in the fluid.....Drop the pan and look!
