OBD-II Scanner Programs

A buddy of mine is using Scan XL Professional on his laptop, and I am looking to get something similar.

I tried adding my 98 Maxima GLE to his program and the vehicle wasn't found.

Does anyone have suggestions for programs that offer Nissan compatibility?

I'm looking at some android apps that are obd II scanners that connect to your car's port with an elm 327 bluetooth transmitter. As far as how they work, I'm not sure but as soon as I get my smartphone and one of those devices I will let your know.
Some of those apps also claim to track mileage, 0-60 times, HP, etc.

I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-Bluetooth-diagnostics-compatible/dp/B005NLQAHS/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362799794&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=AFX+Products+%28TM%29+-+ELM+327+Bluetooth http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-Bluetooth-diagnostics-compatible/dp/B005NLQAHS/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362799794&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=AFX+Products+%28TM%29+-+ELM+327+Bluetooth
and this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...50b3JxdWUiXQ..

They work well together.
You can monitor all the info the ecu puts out (rpm, speed, intake temp, maf, tranny temp, coolant temp, etc.). It also does 0-60, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, etc. Calculates mpg, fuel remaining, and lots of other stuff. It reads obd-2 protocol, and displays the info.

I could make a video for you, or you could search youtube.

Also, don't just get the free version of Torque. It's not useful at all. Spend the $5 and get the full version.

It will also verbally warn you of certain things (misfires and such), whereas the ecu will wait 2 driving cycles before logging it.

I got the ELM327 on eBay for $13 and it has many of features. They make them specifically for either the iPhone or android smartphones. I use it with the 'Torque Engine Management Diagnostics and Tools' SW application I got for a few dollars.

Last year I was trying to find a program and was trying out Scan XL. I had a demo version from them and I got it to work on my 97 but it would not work on my 2000. I spent most of January and part of February working with their tech support before I gave up.

IIRC, there wasn't any select a vehicle and go. You had to manually enter the car's info. So when you say that your 98 wasn't found, are you saying that it could not connect? That was my problem at first, connection could not be made. Then tech support told me to increase some time out settings and it would connect to my 97, but never my 2000. I gave up.

I tried 2 or 3 other software packages and couldn't get them to work, either. So all I have is my hand held scanner.

i have the autel aa101 hand held scanner that i picked up about two years ago to be able to read abs and srs codes. Not a big fan of the scanner as it has lots of bugs, freezes up on me constantly and coverage is very poor but it does read abs codes on 00-01 maxima and srs codes on 2000-up. Another feature I like is it hooks up to can bus to read codes on newer maxima 2009+ and ford, etc.

options others provided seem like a good by, I've also been thinking of getting the wireless with my phone setup. Prices have come down since last I checked.

I have heard a lot of Torque, and it makes me wish I had an Android phone.

All I have right now is my iPhone 5, but I am looking for computer software, and maybe something for my iPhone. I've heard about DashCommand, but don't know if it's worth paying $49 for.

I haven't tried connecting the car to see if anything happens, so I'm going to try that again.

On the main page of the program, there is an "Add Vehicle" option so you can add what you're connecting to, so when I clicked on 1998, Nissan wasn't an option.
So I'll guess I'll see what happens.

I was just hoping someone knew of PC software that can connect to and give all the information about the vehicle for Nissan

I have a question guys. I have the airbag light blinking on my dash after I changed my Steering wheel. The scanner that I have does not seem to be able to erase that error. Do you guys know of another way to do it without going to the dealer

1) Place key in ignition and leave drivers door open
2) Turn key until lights on dash come on, do not start engine
3) as soon as lights on dash illuminate press the door light switch (in door jam) rapidly at least 5 times, better to press 10
4) Turn key off, close door, start engine.

This should result in light being reset. If you didn't press the door jam switch rapidly enough or get through the sequence fast enough it will not work.

Does anyone have advice for iOS apps? I've heard good things about DashCommand, but don't want to shell over $50 for it in the event it does not work.
