Passanger CV axle issue. Sticking out 1/8th inch.

Hi all. First off I searched pretty thoroughly, and couldn't find a thread with a similar issue. Car is a 96 5 Speed SE.

My pass axle seal is leaking. Went under the car to get a better look and noticed the axle is sticking out of the tranny about 1/8-1/4 inch. I rebuilt the tranny about a year ago (with the help of the write up's on here, good stuff) and had no leaks after re-installing the trans. Leak started about a month ago. I imagine the seal is fine and the gear lube is leaking from the gap.

The axle is in decent shape, no clicking when i turn, and the bracket/bearing (held in by 3-14mm bolts between the trans and wheel hub) is solid with no play in any direction. No play in the bearings themselves as they were just replaced and shimmed properly a year ago.

Any ideas? Not sure why it would just pop out a bit after a year. I would imagine the axle is held in the trans tightly by the bracket, which looks fine.

Open to any suggestions/ideas. Thanks.

Are you talking about a gap between the dust shield and the output seal? If so, that wont make a difference.

Not sure what the dust shield is. I take it it's the kind of metal ring at the end of the axle where it meets the trans? If so yes. Right where the axle meets the seal is where the gap is.

edit- You can see the shiny clean lubed end of the axle through the gap. Certainly looks like it used to be in the trans.

Take pictures from all angles and good lighting, and then post it on here.
We can get a better idea that way.

Will do first thing tomorrow. till then maybe this will help.

The whole gold part is showing (dust shield i believe) and the gap is exposing about 1/8 inch of the silver part just to the left of the gold ring and looks to be covered in gear lube. IIRC the silver part is what actually meets the rubber inner surface of the seal and the gold part sits flush against the seal/trans.

Thanks for replies. We just got a foot of snow up in MN so ill need to get to a garage to take pics and do the work. Will post pics tomorrow.
