98 Max, passenger door ajar light shorted?

Swapping in LEDs for the door ajar lights, with them turned on. I did disconnect the battery because of an issue with inspection in the past. So, as I am wiggling out the bulb of the socket, it looks like it shorted out. Flickered and such. Tested both LED panels on the driver's door and they both worked fine. Did not see any fuse related specifically to that door light. So, am I screwed?

So, does the L.E.D. work in the socket or not? I'm guessing no... So did you try putting the L.E.D. in both ways?

The door courtsety light runs through the window switch for that door. If you NEED to, get a new passenger window switch.

Throw the regular light back in and see if it still doesn't work.

I did put the regular light in it, both of them actually. Even tried flipping both sides on the regular and LED bulbs.

Sounds like you need a new front passenger window switch. Get one from the same year car you have to be 100% sure it'll work.

I THINK, the 97-99 are the same but not sure

I just checked, and 95-96 are the same, as is 97-99. but 95-96 is different than the 97-99.

Okay, so I'm pretty stumped. Just tested this a little further. Both incandescent bulbs work, just throwing out the LEDs out of the picture here. I removed the working driver's side courtesy light socket and plugged it into the passenger side. It doesn't work. But, the window button works on the passenger side as well. So something is shot in the wiring I guess? Doubt it's even a fuse because nothing seems to match up to it directly.

sounds about right...but when you say both incandescent bulbs work, you mean in the passemger side?

The window button on the passenger side is a different circuit on that switch than the courtesty light portion.

No worries I'm sure they look exactly alike, but I think they're different part numbers solely because the internal wiring is different.

Both incandescent bulbs were tested in the working socket, which is on the driver's door. They both work. I tested the working bulbs in the socket that isn't working, which is the passenger's side. They both don't go on.

Pretty much. '95-96 use both data lines for communication with all window switches, 97-99 uses one data line for left hand switches, and the other for right hand switches (and likely different LCU IDs). I believe they'll physically interchange, but there's the data lines and a few other differences that will keep them from working.

Likely just need a new RF window switch. You can take it apart and see if it's repairable if you feel comfortable with electronics repair. I might short one out and see exactly what gets damaged this weekend.

So the window switch supplies power to the courtesy light? That's weird.

Not when you think about it...from a design and schematic standpoint it makes sense

The light in the door gets power directly from a fuse (#26). The window switch supplies ground. Look up STEP LAMP (Nissan's name for courtesy lamps) on page 292 of the EL portion of the FSM.
