The pressure plate is what provides the pressure of the clutch. You may have a clutch on it's way out - or you may have a slave cylinder thats going bad. Usually a pressure plate as it wares down gets lose. The springs don't hold as tight over time. The release bearing may be binding on the input shaft also. All in all, your clutch needs to be looked at.
Okay I have a question about this. What is the difference between the clutch that was on my old 87 sentra and the one that is on my 97 se? The maxima has a hydraulic one? I ask because a few years ago the tension on the clutch of my sentra was like it is on my max now and my mechanic noticed it and fixed it, or at least the tension was not nearly what it was. Did this guy know what he was talking about? Could he have fixed it? Or did he just put a band-aid on another problem that just happened not to show up ever again while I had the car. Is the difference in the mechanism for the sentra's clutch and the max's clutch such that you do not need to (or cannot) adjust the tension on the max's clutch?

same exact problem here
i don't even know where to look anymore
clutch grabs very well
shifter is hard to move, clutch pedal is damn stiff.
I am suspecting one of the components before the clutch disc. perhaps the slave cylinder..
here is a random theory:
perhaps as you depress your pedal to the floor, the cylinder or one of the parts of the clutch assembly only move half way..
if you ever try shifting your car with the clutch depress half way, shifter will probably be hard as heck to move into gear.. so while i am depressing the pedal to the floor, it may not necessarily be going down all the way.. so there is resistance somewhere in the clutch assembly causing my pedal to be this stiff and because it does not really depress completely, i am wrestling my shifter.. probably messing up my syncros
anyone have any idea on how i can check the slave cylinder and whether it is bad or not?
