17" rims with 50 series tires- Opinions

Hey I need some opinions..... I have a chance to buy some 17 inch rims but really dont want to lower my car at all since I commute long distance. Do you think 17 inch rims with 50 series tires will fill in the gap enough and will look ok. I think 45's will look a little funny. Anyone have pictures of a non-lowered 98 or so max with 17's and 45 or 50 series tires.

Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to buy the things and put them on my car only to be disapointed.

Thanks

Send a PM or e-mail to Gr8bone. He has a 2k SE w/ 17" rims, 50 series tires, and no drop.

Later,

If 17s can work with 50 series tires, can't 18s work with 45 series tires??

I need more sidewall.

i live in maine so i was worried about ruining $1000 rims so i opted for 50mm (are those dimensions metric?) sidewalls. I am quite glad i did so too, especially since the car is not lowered. i think it looks funny to have super low profile tires with lots of wheel gap...

you don't care about the slower acceleration and the speedometer being off? that is what happens when you go oversize. it still won't fix the wheel gap

What size tires are you talking about? The series is not a distance, so you can't compare them. A 45 could be more on one tire than a 50 on another tire.

I've got 17x7.5 rims with 225/50/17. The gap is still there, but nowhere near as noticeable as with 235/45/17. It looks like it's just a tad larger than the stock 5th gen gap. That said, I'm going to lower it anyway.

That's a 7mm difference in sidewall height. Not much of a difference.

Just to clarify, the sidewall height number (e.g., 45, 50, etc.) is defined as a percentage of the tire's width in milimeters which is designated by the first number (e.g., 225, 235, etc.).

So the sidewall for a 235/45 tire would be 235mm x .45 = 105.75mm. And the sidewall for a 225/50 tire would be 225mm x .50 = 112.50mm.

It is important to keep the sidewall height consistent with the tires/wheels that came stock on the car to maintain speedometer and odometer calibrations.

Don't even get me started on plus-1 calculations.

Accurate speedo/odo tire size on a 17" wheel for a 4th Gen. Max is P235/45 R17.

P235/50 R17 will make both inaccurate & cost you in accelleration. I agree with those who said that even sizing up by 5 points on the sidewall ratio will NOT solve your wheel gap. It may look "slightly" better than the 45 series tire of the same width, but the ONLY way to get rid of Max-gap is by lowering. Sad, but true. . .

Yup, but it's a matter of perception. The fatter tire looks "fuller" than the lower profile.

Eh, whatever.

Here's my car with 17x7.5 45mm offset wheels, with 225/50/17 tires. Sorry about the pics, the batteries are dying.

Here's a pic that shows the difference

I love the look and don't notice any difference in performance.
