Gauge cluster or fuel sender unit?

Hey guys. For the last year or so I've been dealing with a gas gauge that sticks.
It doesn't go up when I refuel. Sometimes it goes halfway up (I always completely fill the tank) about 60-100 miles after I fill up, and stays at halfway...even when my tank is almost empty. Sometimes it doesn't move for weeks. Currently its stuck an inch below E.

Basically it randomly works and then stays where it's at for a week or two and then repositions itself.

Is there any way besides swapping parts that will tell me if its a sender unit or the cluster?
Are there any other possible things that would cause this?

It's more likely to be the sender unit than the cluster.

Any reason for this or just the fact that it's a more failure prone part?

when the gauge cluster goes, it's usually the tach needle gets erratic, not the gas needle.

No harm in rescrewing everything down on the cluster anyhow...but it's just the way it is, most of the time it's the sensor that tells when the gas tank is full - that sending unit.

Alright! Well since I found one on ebay with a lifetime warranty for $55 I just said to hell with it and night it. Can't hurt to replace it anyway and the install is just too easy haha.
I'll report back in abt a week with a follow up.
