can you recomen an Aftermarket air filter for my 97 SE?

Afternoon guys!

Well last time I posted here I was trying to fix up my car, right now its in good shape and besides the horrible gas millage (15mpg) I'm loving my car.

Now for the question, I want to buy an air filter for my car. My brother in law has a Golf GTI 99 and it just sounds amazing when shifting gears. Here is a pic!

Any way i told him I wanted to do the same for my car but he told me I had to not only buy the filter but a mount to keep it in place. I was wondering if any of you bought a specific kit? so I could do the same, or did you do it with out a mount?

Thanks again for the help.

Jim wolf pop charger IMO.
I don't like oiled filters so I put an Amsoil one on instead. Sounds great.

Talkinghorse is an Amsoil dealer here on the org.
He gives great discounts and customer service if you decide to go with a dry filter.

AEM dry flow are dry filters as well. And I would go cold air or not at all if you're concerned about power. Just slapping a filter on like on that Jetta will most likely cause a loss in power over the stock system.

I'm a bit confused, you said you do not like oiled filters and prefer dry ones instead (I would also like a simple dry one) but the one you linked says it uses oil no?

"The filter element is reusable after cleaning and reapplying filter oil, clean every 50,000 miles."

Thanks for the info, could you elaborate a bit more about the cold air? (this is my first car) are you saying that is too close to the motor and will trow in hot air?

All the pics I see of nissans seem to have the same set up, I've only seen one that has the filter close to the ground the rest just seem thrown in there.

Thanks for the info (and patience).

Exactly. The colder the air, the better. I'll go out to my car and take a few pictures of what i have to give you an idea. Its night, so don't judge the pictures. Haha.

Thank you! I look forward to the pics. (Hey why are this filters closed? I mean the cone doesn't have a hole at the end it has a lid.)

Lucky my headlights were already out so I could get a decent picture of where the filter is.

The Popcharger comes with an oiled filter.
That is why I swapped out the filter for a dry one.
What you use from the Popcharger is a velocity stack that bolts right to your MAF and then you can put a dry filter on that.

It has been proven though that cold or hot air intake does near nothing for power.
The OEM intake is superior and has been proven so.
The only reason to switch to a cone intake is to hear your engine scream at high RPMs.
I love the sound.

That's just how the filter is designed. The open end filters are supposed to take in more air without taking as much space as a closed filter. But it's always best to have a big filter over a small filter. The engine will only take in the amount of air needed, so too big is ok, but if it's too small, air flow is restricted, and you lose power.

Yeah, only ram air gives a few HP. Hot loses power, and cold is about the same as stock. But the sound is too good to pass up.

I have AEM with velocity stack. Works good and the sound is great. Probably not real power gains though.

The hot air is only present at idle.
When your driving, there is no loss and you are just blowing hot air saying any different.
There are dynos around this site and many others.
No loss, no gain, just preferences.
I've said my piece, now you all can bicker amongst yourselves.

There's dynos to support both sides, but there's no point in arguing. Neither gain power, and they're both worth it. Haha.

I guess you don't consider a FRAM air filter aftermarket. Other options, cold air etc, don't do our VQ any good as most on here told him in this thread. These forums are for ideas and suggestions, right?

The stock air intake gets its air from over the radiator. There is cool air there already. I have a 96 SE. I installed a K&N filter in the original filter location. The car feels like it has more power, and does get better mileage. I have been using the same filter for 80,000 miles. I have cleaned it twice.

Installing a K&N filter in the stock location is probably the simplest and least costly solution.

I don't think he's really looking for added performance. I think it's for the sound. Of course, there's always the hacked air box solution, but it doesn't sound as good imo.

Thank you so much for all the information,

To clarify, I'm only looking for that sweet sweet sound the air filter makes. I mentioned my gas millage because I think is god awful and I wanted to see if some one was going to say "What 15? are you driving with your e-break on?".

I will check the brands that you recommended, I will be back home in a week and ill get right on it. Pics will follow .
