Y-pipe just installed and IT'S TERRIBLE!!! HELP!

I finally went to Midas and they put on my Cattman Y-pipe, and it makes so much noise and vibration!!

I have an automatic, Apex'i exhaust, RT cat and K&N cone. At idle, my whole car shakes and vibrates! All the coins in my change thing and cupholder rattle like crazy and the sterring wheel shakes. When I go slow (5 mph) the sound is an inconsistent gurgling then quites down as the revs get higher. At 40 mph and 1500 rpms, the car is deffing and teh dash starts vibrating and rattling!!!

Dudes, I need help! What's going on? Are all the y-pipes like this?? I don't like it at all. Any help or explanations would be greatly appreciated as I am ****ed off!!!

its the cat bracket causing the noise.. you have to put bushings between the cat bracket and the body or wedge it over.. have the muffler shop do that..

yes. Get it checked as soon as u can, its not the pipe, or maybe it is cause Cattman has been known for fitment issues.

usually associated with balancing or alignment problem.. if you had it before the pipe.. then check that.. if after the pipe.. then get the pipe problem fixed first..

every y-pipe has fitament issues...not just cattman....when Nealoc187 and I installed his y-pipe that he got from Maxdriver847 (who had no fitament problems) we had fitament issues becuase every maxima is just a LITTLE bit different...there is absolutely no way a certain manufacters y-pipe can fit every car perfectly...

I hear ya...but suprisingly, they had the cheapest price...which was probably my first mistake.

it's just frustrating because I've been waiting 3 months for this thing and reading just good things about the pipe and when I finally put it on, it's nothing like what I thought...

My prediction:

My WSP mandrel bent aluminuzed Y (that is lighter than Stainless steel), will fit perfectly with the new gaskets it came with, and I will FEEL the gains with a cool sound and I will be one happy camper.

O yea sorry about your issues str8ridin'

I get something like that when I am stopped and the engine RPM drops to around 500 or so. I have a y-pipe too. Do you get that when moving or standing still?

Man, I went straight to my computer at work from the shop to get some advice...didn't get a chance to get on it with traffic.

I'm auto!

my cattman y-pipe did this too.
if there is a huge vibration, it's probably touching the k-member.
It's probably the fitment... trust me... I went through what you just went through.
don't waste you money on the installation blah blah...
have the shop check it once more to see if the y-pipe is touching anything.
mine got taken off and ready to ship to cattman again for them to fix.
I can give you pictures in a minute. hold up

That's exactly what it is. I had some idiot at the muffler shop weld the bracket directly to pipe/cat and it vibrated like crazy. I took it back and his supervisor said the other guy did a bad job. He fixed it correctly and now all i hear is my exhaust note, as it should be.

Wow, this thread is making me a little apprehensive when it comes to getting a y-pipe. That was going to be one of my next mods, now I don't know. Unless I know for sure what to look out for and what HAS to be done when it's installed.

i have the same fukin problem! i hate this ******* y-pipe. ok maybe im exaggerating. my problem doesnt seem as bad as yours though. i have a 96 gle (well i had, i just blew the tranny so im not driving anything now) and i get that annoyoing vibration when im stopped like at a light or in drive and stopped. its loud and annoyoing as hell. if you get yours fixed please let me know. yeah it does make my change shake, but only when stopped. once i step on it a little its gone.......its frustrating! especially with the amount of red lights in nyc

Don't be scared of the y-pipe, be leary about who installs it. Just be sure and supervise if you take it to a local muffler shop. I made the mistake of being in a hurry and dropping off the car w/o me being there to watch. Never again! Anyway, as some of the other threads explain, some have more issues than others but you will definetly be happy with the results.

Very funny.....i would have done it myself but my bolts had to be welded off since they were solid rust. and since that cost like 30 bucks, i just paid another 30 to have it put on.

read my post

and here is the conversation me and puremax had if it helps:

Juicy Jay3: My Y pipe rattles
Juicy Jay3: i see you had this same problem
Juicy Jay3: i installed it yesterday
AznCraft: oh
AznCraft: shake a lot?
Juicy Jay3: yeah
AznCraft: yea
AznCraft: it's probably touching somewhere down there
Juicy Jay3: when i start the engine it shakes
Juicy Jay3: what did u do?
AznCraft: and when you drive it shakes again right?
Juicy Jay3: yeah
Juicy Jay3: when i start out slow
Juicy Jay3: it vibarates
Juicy Jay3: what a piece
Juicy Jay3: it makes my car sound like a pos
AznCraft: yea i know
AznCraft: take it to the mechenic, tell them the problem, ask them if the y pipe is touching anything
AznCraft: you probably have the same problems I have
AznCraft: i told brian cat, he is sending me ups and he is going to fix it
Juicy Jay3: i went back to my mechanic
Juicy Jay3: after the problem
AznCraft: what they say?
Juicy Jay3: he couldn't figure it out
AznCraft: what the...
Juicy Jay3: he has already put 7 of them on
Juicy Jay3: he has a maxima too
AznCraft: see if the y pipe is touching anything under there
AznCraft: did you ask for the bracket check and stuff?
Juicy Jay3: he said no
Juicy Jay3: he checked everything out
Juicy Jay3: catback bracket?
AznCraft: ask him to see if he can check if it touches the k member
Juicy Jay3: ok
Juicy Jay3: did you buy yours from custommaxima?
AznCraft: yea
AznCraft: group deal
Juicy Jay3: oh
Juicy Jay3: me too
AznCraft: yea
AznCraft: i think we are the unlucky one
Juicy Jay3: so you just talked to brien himself
Juicy Jay3: no gregg
Juicy Jay3: not
AznCraft: greg doesn't know anything
AznCraft: he sent the mail to brian
Juicy Jay3: but he is the one who sold it..
AznCraft: and we talked about it
AznCraft: he doesn't make the y pipe
Juicy Jay3: true true
Juicy Jay3: so is yours fine now?
AznCraft: im still waiting for the ups to pick it uip
Juicy Jay3: this is bull ****, gotta pay for installtion twice. i'm so ****ed!!
AznCraft: i know...
AznCraft: i paid 50 to get it installed
Juicy Jay3: i thought cattman were the best
Juicy Jay3: those things sucks
AznCraft: and then it was being gay so i asked .org... and they told me the mechenic i went to was stupid and blah blah
Juicy Jay3: my machanic is not not dumb
AznCraft: so i paid $32 to get a pro shop take a LOOK at it
AznCraft: they said the same thing
Juicy Jay3: he spends like 2 hours on his max everyday
Juicy Jay3: working on the turbo
AznCraft: so i went BACK to the other one and uninstalled for 40$
AznCraft: ic...
AznCraft: well, it's probably touching something
AznCraft: that's what mine did
Juicy Jay3: k memeber?
AznCraft: yea
AznCraft: mine was shaking like hell
Juicy Jay3: so now ur sending it back..
AznCraft: i had to press the gas hard all the time for it to be good
Juicy Jay3: brien is paying for the shipping right?
AznCraft: and put it on neutral
AznCraft: yea
AznCraft: but, you have to find out the problem
Juicy Jay3: i can't even really feel the difference
AznCraft: and have proof or brian not going to fix it for u
AznCraft: maybe cause of the shake
Juicy Jay3: proof?
AznCraft: i didn't either pal
Juicy Jay3: how u get that?
AznCraft: picture
AznCraft: or somesort or get him to talk to the mechenic
Juicy Jay3: of the black thing or something
Juicy Jay3: ****!!
Juicy Jay3: this is so gay!
AznCraft: yea i know..
Juicy Jay3: i'm not made of ****in money!
AznCraft: just tell him to uninstall it
AznCraft: and put the old one back on
AznCraft: and then after that
Juicy Jay3: cattman should give us free CAI or something
AznCraft: check the y pipe carefully
Juicy Jay3: for our troubles
AznCraft: and see if you see any chiped spots
AznCraft: yea... ****ed me off too...
Juicy Jay3: chipped spots?
AznCraft: 30+40=70 $ of worthless thing
AznCraft: yea
Juicy Jay3: that might be making the noise?
AznCraft: you drove it for a day?
AznCraft: no...
Juicy Jay3: yeah
AznCraft: if it's touching something
Juicy Jay3: all day today
Juicy Jay3: ok
AznCraft: it should be chipped off
AznCraft: part of my ypipe is chipped off
AznCraft: i posted the picture
AznCraft: u see it?
Juicy Jay3: no
Juicy Jay3: webiste didn't work
AznCraft: you have to copy and paste the link

here is the link again::

Let me put some good thoughts of the Y on this thread. I had my mechanic do it. He did say he had a hell of a time bending the Cattman to fit, but he did a great job. My car sounds great, and you can't even hear the Y at all. Been on like 3 months already. The gains are sweet. Compliments the CAI very well.
