Which danged resonator

Hi gang--
When I'm confused enough I know where to go to get the answer I need. Those that know the Max the best.
Anyway, I'm driving myself nuts here trying to find the correct resonator to replace my old one. As you know for some odd reason they used I dont know how many different exhaust systems on the same model year. Mine ( according to the door sticker) was actually build in 9 of 1998. I'm looking on Rock Auto to buy another and there are 2 there that look like they would work, but they are not the same.
In the Rock Auto catalog, Part # 56039 looks like it, but so also does Part # 47722. According to the list 47222 states CALIFORNIA (EMISSION); Before 3-99, which would be correct, but its not a California car.
If its any clue, mine looks like it has a flat sided pipe attached to the back of the resonator heading toward the muffler. About four inches back it has a hanger with a hanging rod and at this point the pipe makes an immediate left turn going toward the passenger side

I just know if I dont research this correctly, I'll get the wrong danged pipe shipped to me. I've done it before.

I love my Mighty Max but they drive me nuts with these part changes in the middle of the same model year.
Thanks guys for any assistance. I'll check back here after work and hope I found some help here.

If your a Cali spec, you need the Cali spec part
If your not Cali spec, you need the fed spec part.

You have a simple choice here. Do you know for sure if your California or not?

I had the same issue and ended up ordering the wrong pipe. What you need is the Bosal 286-159.

I ended up finding a nice replacement on ebay, it's not bosal, but its better IMO. It has a black coating to fight rust, and have had no issues in the two years since installing.

Here is a link to it:

Do you have an O2 sensor behind the cat? If you do then you don't have a Cali 99.

Technically the B pipe is innerchangeable for all 95-99's. The length between the cat and muffler is the same. The major difference is where the O2 sensor is. 95-96 have the O2 sensor in the cat. The B pipe is one pice from the cat to the muffler with no O2 bung. The Cali spec 99 is the same pipe.

In 97 they decided to take the O2 out of the cat and install it behind the cat. They put it into a small S pipe and then made the B pipe that much shorter. The S pipe and B pipe combined take up the same amount of space. Some aftermarket pipes remove the S pipe and bolt to the cat. They usually have a useless bend in them. Others keep the factory S pipe and will not bolt to the cat.

I probably just confused you more.

Hi again guys... JSutter, I'm not understanding your point on the numbers your mentioning here. On mine, behind the cat I have that small approx 5 inch long pipe, with a bung in it for a sensor, but in my case theres just a plug screwed into the bung. That piece of pipe bolts up to the front of the resonator
DSONNYLAL- I think it may be possible the pipe your linking here MIGHT be the correct one. That is, if it is pictured sort of upside down that is. Mine has that little bar in the bend that goes into a hanger, but it comes the other way toward the driver side. Pictured it looks like its going the other way toward the passenger side, but maybe its upside down or mirrored? And that sure is a great price for it. Free shipping too is really cool. Thanks for the link. I'm still a little hesitant though, I'm still not 100 % sure on this
My VIN for my max begins with JN1CA21D does this mean it is the Cali style..? I mean, this cars been in PA all its life as far as I know.
Again, thanks guys for taking the time to try to help me out with this. I appreciate it lots.

So you have this S pipe but no rear O2 sensor connected?

That means someone has messed with the exhaust before. You have a Cali spec car with a Fed spec S pipe and B pipe.

Get the 47722 and remove your S pipe and bolt the B pipe to the cat.

Hopefully you can see this link to a pic of my setup. Yes, it does look like the above. So, I would have the option of just removing the s pipe, provided when I bolt it to the cat directly, it reaches to the other end which is the muffler/pipe assembly.

LAST question... "B" pipe you mean the resonator pipe ?

Yes you can replace them both. Thats what I would do. I hate that S pipe with a passion.

Here we call it a B pipe. Its also called the resonator or center silencer/muffler.
