Should i rebuild my 5 speed Transmission

I have been a member for a while but have not posted because I haven't hadmuch to contribute, but have definitely benefitted from all the informationthat everyone puts out here, so wanted to thank everyone for putting all thisgreat info out there for people like me.

I have a 1999 SE with about 200k miles on it. I don't think there isanything wrong with the transmission, at least that I can tell, but I am takingit out to change the clutch. Since I am already taking it out, do you all thinkI should rebuild it? I have seen a few posts that explain the process so am fairlyconfident that I can do it myself but don't want to pop it open if it's notnecessary. Only area I am a little concerned about is the spacers for thepreload, but I think there should be enough posts out there that I can figurethat one out also. I think at a min I would need to replace the input andoutput shaft seals even if I don’t rebuild the entire thing. Would appreciate peoplesopinions on this.

Thanks

if you have no problems with it don't touch it.

If you put the car in neutral , release the clutch pedal, and you hear a whirring sound, you should have the input shaft bearing replaced. Other than that it's what Neal said, don't touch it.

I rebuilt mine because I had to, and no matter how confident you are, it will not be worth it. It's pretty much a PITA if you don't have all of the right tools, and it still is when you do have the tools. Haha. If it's not broke, don't try and fix it.

Thanks for the advice. I guess ill just leave it as is, thought it would be a fun project but sounds like its not worth it. Just out of curiousity where did you buy the part to rebuild it from, dealer or aftermarket?

Anyone have any thoguhts on clutches? I am leaning towards Exedy but have not really seen many opinions on standard OE replacement clutches.

If you dont race your car then just buy a exedy clutch and leave your tranny alone if there is nothing wrong with it.

I bought my rebuild kit from American Powertrain Warehouse. All quality bearings. Pretty good price too. All of the bearings, races, and seals were $125 shipped to my door.

You could still rebuild/build up another trans and then once finished, swap them.

Then rebuild your original (easier the 2nd time) sell it and recoup what it all cost you.

best way to do a project!

I would have attempted a rebuild since I only wanted to change the main bearing, but measuring for the shim was the part that I could not grasp. I ended up paying Aamco for a full rebuild. Bad thing about that is I think they put in aftermarket synchros because my car didn't shift smooth like it used to. Unless you see them do it, you don't know what they put in there.

Yup that's my fear with getting it done professionally. Furthermore sincethere is not anything wrong with the tranny that I know of for sure, they maynot even replace everything which would be a waste of several hundred $.

Anyone replace their axels while doing theclutch / tranny fix? My cv boots are torn and have been for a very long time. Itlooks like there is not a good replacement axel shaft out there, other than theChinese made parts that everyone says fail. The dealer wants $1,300 for a pairso not going to do that. I don't get a clicking sound when I turn, but I do geta weird hum noise. Almost like a grinding sound but not quite there. Anyonehave thoughts on the axel, should I replace the entire axel or just the boots?
