First there is no such thing as a performance chip for maximas so you can get that out of your head.

Second only way to tune maximas is with a piggyback, standalone or buy a reflashed ecu.

Look into either a JWT ecu (basically an ecu 'built' to your application) or an emanage.

The JWT ecus are basically cookie cutter; they tune to a set of parameters and thats it, no fiddling around. Basically the tuning is done for you and optimized for your car and mods. However the downside is that if you further mod your car later on or change anything, the tune will no longer be 'optimal' and cannot be tweaked unless you basically pay for the entire thing again. I *think* a reflashed ecu runs like 3-500 dollars.

An emanage is a piggyback system (btw there are other options, the emanage seems to be the most popular) that, to put in simple terms, hooks up to your current ecu and allows you to tune in any way you like. The upside is that you can custimize the tune any way you like, with tons of different things to tweak. The downside is you need to know wtf you are doing, because a bad tune can cause your engine to go boom. Plus, some general electrical knowledge is required, and you will generally need a wideband o2 sensor which isnt cheap and a laptop. These units can range from a few hundred to over 500, not including cost of other equipment needed.

In short if your car is modded to where you are satisfied a reflashed ecu may be for you, however if you are confident enough to tune your own car and willing to risk catastropic failure to get what many consider the "best" tune, a piggyback may be for you.

Just a footnote, you probably could pay a professional to tune your car for you but expect to pay out the yingyang.

Nistune tunes 95 and 96 ECU's.

Much better than JWT because you can tune it instead of once and done JWT.

And just an FYI about JWT..if you find one with the chip already in it and just need a reflash, it's only $100; with that said, I still recommend Nistune and a good wideband.

Interesting, i never really investigated that option myself. Just a Q but can you raise the rev limiter via a nistune? Originally i was going to opt for a VAFC2 but now im looking into getting an EMU; if nistune has that function than i might just go with that considering i just bought a 95 ecu.

I don't own one, but the installer was very friendly when I was question happy, so feel free to email him.

I would imagine you could raise the limiter with Nistune...I hope so anyways.

When I'm sitting on money to burn, I'll find out if you haven't already.
