Also need opinions on potential 4th gen.

I have an opportunity to purchase ($2500) a 98 with decent miles (133k) that seems to run well and looks taken care of - good tires, three owners.

CEL is on.

I'm getting cold feet given inspection is due on the car.

Offer me some advice - please.

If the CEL is on, I'd print out a copy of the code list and pull the codes, then you'll know. First thing I always do is check the oil for signs of water getting into it, also the cam cover plug, is it all gunged up or is it normal? Engine mounts are expensive but they are really easy to check assuming you have a helper to watch the motor as you engage FWD/REV. Usual stuff. If paintwork and interior are good the price seems reasonable.

Do what clive said. Get the codes, find out what the issues are, and see if it'll be worth fixing them, or if they need to be fixed right of way. That sounds like a good price, I'd offer 2.5k due to the CEL regardless of the codes, unless it was a major issue, then obviously go lower.
