The FSM shows how to do this. It is in the RS section (Restraint System).

You can get the FSM here:

You didn't say what year your car is. If you have a 98 or 99, be careful handling the reel. It has an explosive charge like the airbag to make sure it locks in a crash.

I've never tried it, but I think it will.

Disconnect the battery...

I'm not sure this work will really trigger the bag since there's a whole math problem wherein all of the variables need to be satisfied for the bags to fire, but better safe, right?

I once read that Nissan has a lifetime seatbelt warranty.

Is it lifetime or ten years?

the 4th gen has a lifetime warranty. Somewhere later on after the 5th gen, the warranty was reduced to 10 years.

But I'm not so sure that wear and tear is covered. Calling a dealer (or two) wouldn't hurt.

Well in that case I need new seat belts on both '97's. Dog chewed up the gle; before I got it. And my daily needs new spring reloaders.

Here is a press release on the 1997 Maxima. The last paragraph says the seat belts have a lifetime warranty.

i changed the seatbelt using a 97 seatbelt on a 98 max today. i did not unplug the battery and everything went fine. just followed the direction from the link above. not sure why you would disconnect the battery since it is not plugged into anything.

the design of the retractor at the bottom was different. the 98 had a shield protecting more of the seatbelt.

just great, 98 maxima has Lifetime Seat Belt Warranty. wasted $45.

All cars have the same seat belt warranty, it is federal law. There was nothing else that had a lifetime warranty. The emission equipment had a 10 year warranty, but the 4th gen is more than 10 years old now.

I don't know if a frayed belt would be covered anyway. Wear and tear usually isn't.

Same goes for Quickywd with the dog chewing up the seat belt, I don't think the warranty would cover that.

Then you may have to fight the dealer. A lot of them don't know about the warranty, either.
