monroe front quick strut part numbers

Hello -

I've read the FAQs and searched without finding the answer. I found this:

http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...roduction.html

I have a 98 I30 - I'm rebuilding the front suspension. None of the usual suspects lists any type of quick strut for the I30 - but they all do for 98 Maxima.

I have already purchased Monroe Sensatrac #171682 & #171683 from O'Reilly - these seemed to be the highest-quality part available for the 98 Maxima.

"Will Monroe #171682 & #171683 fit and function properly on the 98 Infiniti I30?"

Thank You -

Mr. Stuff

Thank you for your prompt reply.

RE: Monroe's website - that is a part number for a strut only. I am inquiring about a "quick strut" - an already-assembled mount, strut, and spring assembly.

Please use Monroe's website to look up the 98 Maxima and you will see my #171682 & #171683 listed there instead - the OESpectrum units that are highlighted in your image above for I30 are also listed for Mxima - but the quick strut assembles listed for Maxima are not also listed for the I30.

Here's an e-catalog search for my car - '99 Maxima.

Based on the fact that the P/Ns listed in the search of my parts ('99 Maxima) include those listed for your car ('98 I30), I'm sayin that the parts will interchange.

Thank you Turbolink -

It is strange that the same quickstrut part # is not listed for both Nissan and Infiniti applications when the strut part #s alone do seem to interchange.

The obvious answer is that there must be something different about the springs on an Infiniti vs. a Maxima - I notice that springs are not available a-la carte (from Monroe at least). The previous (original) owner had all the struts replaced with complete assemblies a while back - thus the OEM Infiniti springs that came with the car are long gone, if there was anything unique about them that's been lost now.

Is there a more appropriate place on this forum to ask this question about my Infiniti? I clearly see that I'm on "maxima.org", and I also now see that there's a Infiniti I30/I35 forum here as well...I thought this 4th gen forum would appropriate but maybe I was wrong...

You are driving a nissan maxima with a bit more luxury crap in it. On the maximas the SE has a stiffer spring for example compared to the gxe and gle. That's going to be the same deal on your car. I put eibachs pro kit on my 99 se and it handled like a racecar but the kyb gr2's let it down on bumpy roads but that's my fault for being cheap on the struts. Enjoy your new plush ride.

The springs for a 1998 Maxima GLE auto trans and a 1998 Infiniti i30 auto trans are the same.

Here is the parts listing for the Maxima followed by the Infiniti parts listing.

http://www.nissanpartszone.com/parts...010-4l809.html

http://www.infinitipartszone.com/par...010-31u24.html

In the parts book for the 1998 Maxima, there is only one coil spring listed for all the models. But there is a different spring for the auto and manual trans equipped cars. When it comes to the sway bar, there is one for the SE and another for the GXE and GLE.

what was actually in the quickstrut boxes

Attached are pictures of the Monroe #171682 & #171683 I purchased from O'Reilly's in the Village in Houston, TX.

The quickstrut with the large white bushing at the top/robust boot/"the one that looks put together properly" is #171682 (front right).

The quickstrut without the large white bushing at the top/smaller diameter, shorter length boot/"the one that doesn't look put together properly" is #171683 (front left).

So the disclaimer is that I've not previously seen correctly rebuilt left and right front struts for a 4th Gen Maxima/I30 - this is my first time working on this car. That being said - I'm pretty sure both sides should look pretty much the same (except for the orientation of the top hat and lower control arm perch) - and I'm pretty sure the one with more robust bushings and boots (the one with the white bushing at the top) is the one that I would want on both sides.

Doesn't it look like the quickstrut without the white bushing/all that silver of the strut rod showing due to short boot length was "not re-assembled with the correct parts"?

Thanks,

Mr. Stuff
