How to test Ecm

I have a 1996 Maxima and I did a scan today and the following codes came up 0500,0325,0600,0443,1400,1105. Is there a way to test the Ecm and make sure that everything is working.

That's quite an assortment of codes.

P0325 = knock sensor
P0443 = EVAP Canister Purge Control Valve/Solenoid Valve
P0500 = Vehicle Speed Sensor
P0600 = Auto Trans Control
P1105 = Manifold Absolute Pressure Switch
P1400 = EGRC Solenoid Valve

Did this happen all at once or has the check engine light been on for a while/long time?

If all this happened at once, you may have a grounding issue. Check the main ground under the battery. Otherwise diagnose each code for what it indicates. Except the knock sensor code. This is usually a ghost code that likes to show up any time you have a legitimate code. Take care of everything else and this code will probably go away.

Section EC of the Nissan FSM covers these codes.

Don't have the manual? Get it here:
http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Maxima/1996/

page 10 will show you where most of the parts are located.

I replaced EGRC Solenoid Valve and I am getting 12 volts to the unit but the code has not cleared.

The code does not go away instantly when you fix the problem. It stays in the ECM memory for a while until several drive cycles have passed. Or you can reset the ECM for instant results.

If the ecm sees an intermittent fault it will never go away even if you replaced the part.

And it automatically deletes any pending or hard faults after 40 drive cycles to be exact if it sees no faults taking place.

What constitutes one drive cycle?

Some parameters must be met.

Time passed since started.
Coolant temp. Rise over current temp. By 40F
All monitors must have passed and checked ok.
A single monitor such as the egr will not be completed going around town because it also needs to meet certain scenarios.(highway time)

In your case since you had a egr fault now that you replaced it is still not completed. Drive for a while. Cruise speed and decel is best for egr.
After the ecu sees no faults after 3 consecutive times(3 monitor rediness)light will go off due to a class A fault. Emissions

Or...or since you know you fixed the problem unplugged battery and in the morning run it. If MIL comes back on you know it has not been properly fixed.

P0600 = Auto Trans Control. What do I need to work on to fix that?

In the 1996 service manual (link given in post # 2 above) go to section EC. Follow the index listing down to "TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS FOR DTC P0600", towards the end of the 2nd page. You might want to note for future reference that the list is numerical by the DTC P number.

Either click on the link or manually go to page 256 and follow the diagnostic procedure.

I tested the ECM to TCM connector and everything checked out fine. I may have to change the TCM. How do I take out the TCM, it does not want to slide out?

Never had to remove one, so I don't know what is required.

Since everything checked out with testing the connectors. The next best thing would be to replace the TCM or is there something else I should look into?

Wiring doesn't go bad that often unless there has been human intervention so I can believe that the connections tested OK. I would suggest another TCM, getting one from the junkyard. A new one from the dealer is expensive:

part # 31036-40U00, CONTROL UNIT-SHIFT, list price $605.

You need to get one from a 95 or 96. 97, 98 and 99 each have their own. I don't know what the difference is on them, though. It just might be the shift points and maybe not.

I had a p0600 code before, this you should know
1. if your speedometer works fine then it's not the VSS it's the Revolution Speed Sensor instead, that's what the giving you the speed sensor code, this will also cause your computer to send a p0600 code because the car would shift right or would go into "Limp" mode sometimes, or just don't wanna shift at all, the sensor your looking for (check the link for a picture http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ed-sensor.html) is attach to the transmission that tells the tcm when to shift or the shift points depending on what speed your transmission is going, and it's located under the driver wheel once your remove the splash shield

P.S my post only counts if your speedometer is working, and that p0500 code states that it isn't so good luck

Do you by any chance know what the part number is for the Revolution speed sensor. I am finding the vss part number but not the revolution speed sensor.

Well, the service manual says it could be the TCM. pm Maxima_Joe or visit your local junkyard.
