98 Prelude VS 95 Max

I was going to the races with usual my friend on saturday and about midnight my friend called this guy with a Prelude (my friend has one). So we met up and everything of course my friend was like OHHH DANG! He MUST be fast and all this. Well it is the Type SH version manual with Cold Air intake so I was a little intimidated (ok ok very intimidated). Well were heading home and we pull up to a redlight and I see him pull into the lane next to me as he was following me and starts reving. Im like great I have my 50 pound sub in the trunk and my friend (about 160). Well I go for the heck of it. Light turns green and I drop it into 1st at 5750 rpm (automagic) perfect take off for me. I am a little ahead of him I switch to 2nd perfectly I still have a bumper or so on him and 3rd gear I was a hair late but still kept the lead then he started to pull a little on me and we both slowed at around 80 cause it was a real cop's heaven around there. My friend just looked at me and said what the HELL! He was so ****ed. I want to know why he pulled on me so bad after 3rd I mean it wasn't just cause I shifted a little late cause I have noticed this before when I shift perfect that I start to lose around 70 or so!?!?!? Any mods to help this? Also my friend in the car with a stock 2001 prelude beat me by a bumper from a 20 mph roll. So the launch is good its just it doesnt keep up after that.

I hope you like replacing transmissions. Neutral drops are the pinnacle of idiocy.

Do all the preludes pull that much after 50 or 60? Or is it because our Maxi friend is an auto? A 5-speed Maxi with similar mods wouldn't have had that much trouble, would she? Nevertheless, those VTEC's are quick with the exception of the Integra GSR's (stock). I test drove one of those before buying my Maxi. They handle like a dream but were almost as sluggish as the 1989 Volvo turbo I had at the time. And it was nothing more than a Swedish tank.

Are you nuts or something? Any sort of "neutral drop" will distroy your transmission. Perfect launch? I think not. Your going to shatter it into pieces. I'm sure that if you've been doing this for some time that you've already caused some damage in there. It's only a matter of time......

I'd hate to see what this guy would do to a 5 speed?

Yeah I know its bad for it but....Im one of those people that REALLY hate losing. I have tried power braking before and it ruined my front rotors. Anyone have tips for launches with an auto?

Powerbraking won't ruin your rotors. And you will get a better launch by powerbraking than by doing a neutral drop like an idiot. Especially after your transmission gets destroyed because you "really hate losing." Good lord what will you people think of next.

What's a neutral drop again? IS it when you just floor it from the getgo and the engine revs to like 5k+ and then whatever gear it lands on it takes off in?

Preludes just pull hard at highway speeds. Gearing, and powerband is why. Everytime I race my brother's '99 Prelude, I get smoked. It's never even a contest, he just pulls on me from the start. But my car is an auto w/ 19"s and big brakes, so that would explain why. We'll see how it goes after my SC and nitrous.

well I guess I just got so use to neutral dropping cause my friend used to do it a lot. I have heard its best to powerbrake at around 3k rpm? Correct me if Im wrong but mash down on the brake pad almost all the way to the floor put the tranny in 1st and then rev to whatever rpms and let go of the brake when the flagger drops?

it's shifting in an auto. flooring in neutral, shifting to 1, 2 and drive. don't do it. it won't yield better times and even if it does you will drop your tranny the 20th time you do it (hyperbole, but still, don't do it).

I was in this guy's 2001 Prelude SH, and I asked him to show me his VTEC skills. He downshifted and floored it, and when he hit about 5 or 6k rpms, it felt like a turbo was kicking in. It got really loud and the car surged forward.. So yes, the VTEC really does work on those Hondas.

Of course it works or they wouldn't put it on 90% of their cars. 2k2 Maximas have variable valve timing too.

I've driven a few SH's, and they do pull very hard at high RPM. I raced one evenly a few times in my 3rd gen 5spd from couple stoplights. I think the SH is something ilke 6.8 0-60 with a 1/4 mile in the low 15's. That should be enough to pull on a auto VQ Max, correct?
