Ball bearing and spring fell out of tranny

I was draining the transmission oil the other day and a ball bearing and spring fell out of the drain hole. I did a little research and think that it might be a detent spring and ball bearing. I need to know how to put them back in. Can I just put both back in the hole that I think that they belong in and if so, does the spring go in first or the ball bearing?

While I don't know where that spring and ball bearing goes, as a detent the spring goes into the hole first as the ball bearing has to ride against the part it acts as a detent for.

Pretty sure the BALL is going to go in the hole first. Would help to have a pic of what you were using as a drain hole. When I changed the tranny in my car a bracket that holds the position sensor wire was held down by a cap that had a spring and detent ball like that behind it. It's the detent ball for 1-2 if I remember right. The ball rides along a rod inside the tranny that's why it goes in the hole first so the spring holds the ball against the rod. The easy trick that techs use to hold the ball on the spring when you install it is use a small dab of either grease or petroleum jelly, doesn't take much just enough to hold the ball on the spring so you can get it in the hole and put the screw cap back in to hold it.

Can you please post a picture of where that came out of? My car will not go into reverse and I need to pull that out to see if that is what is stopping it, but I am not sure what bolt it is behind. Also, if you can tell me where it came from I can pull that bolt and see what order the ball and spring go and I will report back.

You didn't use the correct drain hole, I did the same mistake when I drained mine for the first time. ball first then spring... Drain is lower, hard to see because shift rod is in the way.

I dont have a jack where I am at now, but here is a picture from the FSM that has the bolt in it.

I drew an arrow pointing to the bolt that I unscrewed. The bolt is right under the shift rod linkage bracket. I had to unscrew it to get access to the left bolt on the bracket. Hope this helps

Very easy mistake to make. I did the same thing.

There are any number of bolts that could be the drain hole.

I eventually pulled the speed sensor out of there. It drained quite quickly.

Can someone show us a picture of the correct one please.......?"
