Technically speaking, they're toast now. The catastrophic failure point would be hard to predict. You've got some time, but don't put it off to long. Had you got to them as soon as they ripped, the repair would be $15 bucks and some elbow grease.
i had a torn boot for 3 years, but never had a clicking noise. same side as you, one day the knuckle just broke loose and it sounded like a box of metal clanking around and i was stranded. driver's side is what you need, i would go to napa and get a lifetime warranty replacement like i did. do you have, abs, non-locking differential, auto or manual?? find out what you have by getting you vin, ( on your door jam, drivers side ) and they can look it up at napa. right around 95-100.00 with core ( you get core back ) and not sure about labor, little over an hour and probably 125.00 and up depending on the shop. good luck

Don't wait any longer. Replace both sides asap. Get them at a local autostore that not only offers lifetime warranty but brand NEW axles. Refurbished axles made by cardone will not last as long. With an online discount of 20% you can purchase new lifetime warranted axles at autozone for only $134. They've lasted over 100,000 miles for some members.
Do some searching within maxima.org forums along with some other sites to get the info needed to DIY. There are many threads and youtube videos already created that will give you guidance.

I've found the driver side is easier to replace because the axle is shorter and doesn't go through the additional carrier like the passenger (e.g. right) side. Since I'm usually replacing axles on a 4th gen with over 150,000 miles, I pick up a new transmission seal and replace it along with the axle. On my first 4th gen Maxima I didn't replace the seal and the old seal started leaking a few weeks later. So from then on, I make it a practice to replace the seals to keep from having to do a rework sometime later.

Someone told me that changing the boot is just as difficult, if not more difficult than just changing the axle itself. Any truth to this?
You should have some time to repair this. I drove on my Camry's bad CV joints for about a year. When you turn, they should click more. If they don't make that much noise you have time but when they start getting louder when you turn, they need replacing. I wouldn't wait as long as I did. I was lucky.
