What is the best intake and muffler combination for the maxima ...no cai
if like how you said...no sound increase? then get a K&N panel filter. and stick to your stock muffler.
but if you don't mind a little sound? get a jwt or stillen intake...jwt think from courtesy nissan runs like $100 after discount?!
don't get the r-active intake..sucks!
if you have some $$ to spend...why not try the HKS super megaflow? my friend has one and think it is quite tough sounding...though I'd go with the cotton intakes.
mufflers? go stock for no noise increase...and perhaps a universal one plus a tip if you want some tough look...with minimal increase in noise...though the interior would have a noticeable noise increase.

Did you also consider the Y-Pipe? It makes lots of power and doesn't increase the noise that much with a stock exhaust.
As for mufflers, I've heard Apex'i mufflers are quiet, but need welding for install. Since you have a 95 you can get the HKS muffler and it'll fit perfectly on your max.
Intakes, JWT or Stillen ...your choice. Haven't heard anything about the MegaFlow, but it cost as much as the CAI, probably not worth the money.

I know this might sound ghetto but I bought a dynomax exhaust because I was soooo frustrated with my stillen on my old sentra. I hate those loud exhausts and although you gain in high end driving you lose a lot of low end. I thought that the exhaust would make a good "for now" kind of exhaust because I had a lack of dinero. Well, I have no bad comments about that dynomax exhaust at all. IT IS NOT LOUD. IT does havea low tone to it and it sort of makes that car seem a bit more sport car sounding. I have gotten compliments on the way my car sounds from other max owners who have HKS and Stillen exhausts. Most of them seriously regret buying stillen. The y-pipe is good also. I dont have one buy my buddy does and it makes a good combo with any exhaust. THe k&n drop in filter is good also...this is however for less sound and some power.
does the the K&N drop in really gain much?
if some at all.....
maybe you can remove the lower part of the stock intake box, install the dropin filter securing it with silicone glue (the one they used to seal glass window.
That might gain you some HP...probably more then just dropping in the filter.
Cone intake would be better..but you lose some low end for high end...
get JWT or Stillen...um...cotton filter..I dunno
definately get Ypipe...no muffler....
it seems that if you go ypipe and no muffler you get good gain and tolerable noise....couple with mod intake will be good...
that's the general take from many driver...btw...cai probably the least loud....only draw back is the hole...which I do not want either...oh well...
oh yeah..you can get the UPRD ECU if you are not a 99 ^_^
that is not loud and you gain power and torque ^_^

You will not get water in there unless you drive through 2 feet deep puddle... but if you do that... well... I wuldn't blame it on the CAI.
K&N Drop In Filter>>> Read
Turbo Magazine has a special Maxima Project section and in the last issue they put in a K&N Drop in filter and got 4 wheel hp increase on the dyno. They then compared it by taking out the intake system with no filter and got 4.4 wheel hp increase. That's only .4 hp difference between filter and no filter, pretty impressive.

Thanks a lot

Save yourself some cash and get a cone filter and make a heat shield (go to my website). If you want a cool looking non-CAI then get the HKS setup. I've got it on my Max and I love it. Check out my site for pics of the HKS and heatshield. Cruising the HKS intake sounds stock, but when you dip into the gas it growls. Get a Y-pipe and get a B-pipe. Keep your stock muffler. I bought the HKS muffler then the Y-pipe then the B-pipe. My car went from cool sounding to pretty loud (for a 4 door) to almost Riceboy. I had to get rid of my HKS muffler due to sound and droning. Now with just the Y-pipe and B-pipe, the stock muffler sounds like what my HKS sounded like before any exhaust mods. I like it. Even better is that I lost no power switching back to stock. I ran the same exact ets with and without the HKS muffler.
Keep the stock muffler, get a nice MODERATE exhaust tip, buy a Y-pipe and B-pipe. $100-160 for a cone intake, $300 for a y-pipe, and $189 for a B-pipe and you'll be set.

If you are looking for maximumm quietness and good HP increase from an intake and muffler i definatly recommend the HKS combo.. when moderate throttle the exhaust note is almost stock with a very small increase in noise, almost not noticable.. but when you want people to hear it.. ex maximum throttle the HKS intake and Muffler sound AWESOME together... here is a link to my site and DL the videos to hear the combo

Quiet exhaust
I run a K&N panel, Courtesy B-pipe, and Y2K muffler. As quiet, or quieter, on a 4th Gen, with noticable performance increase. Engine now seems eager, as compared with wife's stock I30. Tried POP charger, but noise at 3K under acceleration sounded well, out of character for the car. Considered Cattman y-pipe, but emissions was an issue for me. I wanted performance increase with no noise increase, and got it. I figured Nissan had more money for R&D, and similar goals to mine. Good luck.
for the sake of a legal-look and quietness, just go get a K&N Panel replacement.
And since yours is a 95, why not consider getting a RT-CAT? You will definitely see (feel) some improvement over your old stock CAT. Courtesy B-pipe is a must as well.
I have a CA spec 99. That means I will never consider the Cattman Y-pipe. Come on, Save the Earth.

For a good gain with little increase in noise, I would personally go with a JWT intake and y-pipe (Stillen or Cattman). The intake will roar at WOT, but IMO it's a much nicer sound than many of the exhausts and mufflers I've heard on imports. At light-moderate throttle, not too noticable, if at all. The combination of an intake and y-pipe should give close to 15 dyno proven horsepower and around the same amount of torque. Those are peak numbers though and there is a gain throughout the entire rev range which is very noticable. Personally, I'm waiting until next year to get my y-pipe. No money right now and I couldn't put the power to the ground if I wanted to now anyways......damn snow.
