Antenna not fully extending

Hello maxima people. I have been a long time lurker and have gotten a lot of good advice over the years. I looked through all of the threads before posting this one to make sure I'm not repeating a question.

First I had a completely dead antenna motor on my 97. So I ordered a used replacement from a guy on eBay. This was the item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331322161431

I went to install it... installed perfectly, fit well. But it's only extending about 3 inches. See the video I uploaded on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRlEURpFD5o

The motor whirls for about 1-2 seconds. It doesn't sound like the motor is trying to push it up and it's stuck. I tried wiping the part of the mast that is extending with wd40, but that is not helping.

Did I get a bum unit from the eBay guy?

I had a similar problem on a Toyota I had. If the motor is working, you probably have a problem with the mast or the mast feeder line, which is a plastic line connected to the mast with teeth notches on it. It might have broken. A mast costs about $15 and is easy to put in. There are instructions online. You will need to get all the old mast pieces out of the motor assembly if the feeder line is broken.

Yup I bought a mast from eBay and installed it. There is a good YouTube of the fix for a Honda iirc, same process.

If the rope gear is stripped you can just pull the mast out. If the rope gear is broken you'll have to tear the assembly apart and clean out the pieces

Thank you all for your responses. I was afraid that this unit was malfunctioning. As far as replacing the mast, it seems that I'm going to have to be pretty crafty to get the mast out of the unit. The eBayer seems to be genuinely sorry he sent me a bum unit, so he's going to send me a refund.

I'll probably just order another complete one from the antenna masters website.

When I got mine last year, the antenna was dead, I found one out of a mid 90's cadillac Deville (easier to find in the junkyard). It took a little bit of mounting, but IIRC it fit the hole pretty well. Works fine. There are two different ones I find in the Deville's, one that has a weird plug for the antenna, and one that has a universal plug that seems to be the standard plug. I ended up running an antenna cord up to my head unit from the antenna. I love it when you can take a part out of one car and get to work in a different car! I have had a few different cars I've put Caddy antennas in.
