96 Maxima, had cel but it turned off before I could check it. Any way the computer stored it so I can still retrieve it?

If the error is intermittent, then the error will clear itself when "X" number of error free drive cycles have been completed. A professional grade scanner may still see a pending code. I have a rear O2 that sets a code about once a month and clears within a week.

That's about the amount of time it turned off in...I also noticed it had a funny o2 sensor reading when I hooked it up for diagnostics a couple months ago so I'm guessing o2. Car has 87,xxx miles and I hear they're due every 100k-ish?

That's what I've read over the years. I've read the rule of thumb is:

OBDI cars (pre-4th gen models) - 60,000 miles

OBDII cars - 100,000 miles.

I've replaced O2 sensors on three 4th gens so far. Usually I buy a 4th gen with 150,000 miles or more that still has the originals. I've noticed an improvement in low end pep and maybe a mile or two MPG improvement after I install new ones.

I've only used NTK (NGK) brand O2 sensors.. Not saying others are bad -- just no experience with anything else.. I think guys find some deals for O2 sensors on eBay. I've bought some there that turned out good..

Here's a PhotoBucket story board (new feature) where I changed O2 sensors on my first 4th gen (95 model).

As you can see I had some rust issues to deal with on that car.

They might be stored under historic codes. I use the torque app that has a option to pull historic codes. I don't know how long a code will sit there before being erased completely.
