97 5-speed se NATS problem....

Just picked up a 5-speed the other day. Started it up and drove around to warm up the oil for a oil change. Pulled it back in the garage, and changed it properly like I have done countless times on my gxe-auto, left the hood up and driver side door open, while turning on the ignition. Power completley cuts out and car wont start. figured out its NATS, but thought it was only a problem with 98-99? I found multiple threads that describe solutions but no follow ups. So whats the deal with this NATS? I have never had that problem with my gxe?

NATS is '99 only. NATS disables the injectors. NATS is not your problem.

So you have no power while the key is in the start position, or ignition, or off?

If it's only nothing happens in the start position, try wiggling the key while it's turned all the way, possibly a faulty ignition switch.

If you have no power regardless, check your battery terminals.

Just to echo what pmohr said, NATS is a '99 only thing.

^ Well thats quite a relief.

I turn the key, everything powers up like normal. Proceed to start the ignition and everything shuts off. Turning the key back and forth through each cycle has no effect. No power in any key position unless I disconnect/reconnect neg. battery terminal. Security light is blinking rapidly and beeping rapidly. On my gxe, whenever this would happen, the horn would sound and all I would have to do is unlock the driver side door to dis engage.

Edit/ as i read more and more im leaning toward the ignition switch being faulty, although I still think its weird that I am not getting any power to anything after turning the key back and forth and in and out while the securtiy light is blinking and bleeping irradically. Will change out the switch asap, as it seems inexpensive and easy to DIY and will follow up with results.

Check both battery cables and the smaller power cables that tap into the positive terminal.
Sounds like your losing power do to a poor connection somewhere.

Just wanted to follow up, it was the negative battery terminal end like you guys said. pretty silly but might as show my fix.

problem: electric cuts out when foot is on clutch and ignition is turned on. door lights/security lights dim and flashing.

solution: replaced negative battery terminal end.

old negative terminal end:

So I am pretty sure the previous owner of my car replaced the odometer with a lower mileage odo. The speedometer occasionally (not too much) stops reading vehicle speed, and the milage stopped rolling. Is this common with swapped gauge clusters? Either way even if it wasnt swapped the true milage is not 109,000 mi which angers me.

p.s the other day I found a tooth brush in the engine bay...
