Well, winter is coming up and I was curious as to what kind of wax you guys are using--since around the NYC area it is very hard to wash your car when it gets cold. And I am not planning to bring it to the car wash so they can scratch the heck out of the paint.

I am currently using the Meguiars, but the canaruba wax lasts only a good month or so before fading--anyone have a good brand of wax that can last a good 4 five months against the elements and salts?

how is Zaino compared to Meguiars? Is there a Meguairs wax that last longer than the 1-2 months wax interval?

Zaino lasts a heck of a lot longer than Meguires from my experience. That's in the summer, though. Dunno about winter performance, but I imagine it'd still be better.

I could go 2-3 months with one Zaino application vs only a few weeks with Meguires. Zaino is awesome from the standpoint of longevity.

I heard that there is this wax or polish or something that you can buy from most dealers that keeps the car looking good and protected for a long time. But I also heard bad sh-t about it too, like it messes up yor paint and it doesnt shine like real wax does. I used Zymol...i think that is how you spell it. I love it...I use it once every month or two. I dont really think there is a way to get around waxing your car every few months. Waxing yoru car also gets out all the rust and elements from your paint therefor I never take the chance. By the way I also live in NY, in Binghamton so I know how bad it is to wash your car in the winter, plus my car is dark red and the dirt and salt love it (sarcasm).

how about

good ol' turtle wax? I used it for a bit of time and even though it is not a "natural type wax" it lasted pretty long time. I put on about two coats before last winter and it lasted pretty well. i would say it is comparable to Meguiars but I have never used Zaino's--I think I am going to check it out...

is layering one type of wax over another brand bad? I am thinking about washing my car in a week or two and then giving it a good polish first, then a couple of layers of wax with the turtlewax--and then to cover it up one more time with the meguiars Canaruba wax?

Tried everything from Turtle wax, Meguiars, Mothers, Zaino, Zymol, etc...

And I've come to the conclusion that no wax lasts longer than a month. So, my suggestion is just stick with one brand and wax every month or so. Right now I just wash my car with Turtle Zip Wax (it's a soap, despite what the name says), polish with Meguiars Gold Class polish, and wax with Meguiars Gold Class or Turtle Wax (the green stuff). Seems to work fine for me.

Oh, there is a HUGE difference between how long a liquid wax lasts compared to a carnuba paste wax. I;m talking about the paste wax that comes in a round tin, like a huge glob of solid oily wax. That stuff lasts at least twice as long as the liquid wax. But then it should, since paste waxes take like three times longer to wax on and wax off than liquid waxes.

Turtle Wax

Hmm. Yesterday, I waxed the Max for the first time since I got it. Today it rained. So my beloved car is now dirty. But I can see water beads now!

Anyway, I used the Turtle Wax green-goop-in-a-can. I felt stupid, like I was pretending to put on paste wax but was really just applying liquid in a different way. I think I like the harder paste stuff better. The green shows up on my white car, though.

I had some Meguiar's "Cleaner/Wax"... but the "cleaner" bit sounded a little aggressive, so I didn't use it.

And I did use the Turtle Wax Zip Wax car wash... I've got no comments on it.

Bottom line... I don't like the Turtle Wax product, purely for subjective reasons.

Anybody notice a lot of "what is the *BEST*?" posts lately?

And again, I must disagree with Eric. My car is parked outside overnight, and in a garage during the day. Year round. In my experience with various products, Meguiars 3 step with gold class wax had a great shine for about 3 weeks, with acceptable protection for a maximum of 2 months (less so in the winter and bad weather). About every other carnuba product I've tried is about the same. Zymol, Mothers, etc, I can't say I've ever really noticed any difference between them in terms of shine and life. Zaino on my car has a good shine for about 4 months and acceptable protection for about 6 months. It seems unphased by bad wether, it made it through the winter (never washed, driven on wet salted roads and snow) and washed up in the spring to a great shine and as perfect beading as the day it was applied. Around 6 months I notice the beading to start deteriorating a bit. I'd say if your car is more protected than mine, you could probably get a year out of it, although you may want to touch up with another top coat of wax for looks. It's also got a better shine, while not exactly shinier than other products, it's a more transparent shine that has an added depth to it compared to other products.

Remember, any product will work fine as long as you apply it properly. For me, I decided I'd rather do Zaino twice a year than Meguiars monthly. But it's up to you, either one will protect your car and keep it looking good, I'm just lazy and prefer the deeper gloss of Zaino.

Armarol Wax...according to Consumer Reports!

They say use meguiars cleaner and polish and then hit it with Armarol was for a long lasting durable shine.

Well everyone has different opinions about waxes. My car is parked outside, and has been parked outside for all of its' life. It's parked in a garage like one day each year. Also, I think since we have different color Maximas, the waxes perform differently on our finishes. Black cars show every single scratch and ding, and dirt builds up very quickly on it.

Like I said, everyone has a different experience. From my experience, and I have all the products in my garage, I see little difference between using the expensive stuff (Zaino) and the cheap stuff (Turtle Wax).

turtle wax

I used it overthe winter last year and it seemed to have held up pretty good. But here is the thing--last winter was fairly mild and sure, there were days of snow, but right after it was hot and all the snow melted off pretty much and there weren't those days where you have your car spotted with salt.

THe reason I am so concerned is that the paint for the Max isn't that good--and the last thing I want is for my 97 Max to start peeling and to look like it was abused

In any case-- I'll give it a couple of good layers of turtlewax and when it warms up--I'll do the monthly canaruba wax from Meguiars.

I also have a black Max and use the Meguires 3-step process. I find that it hides some of the swirl marks and some types of scrathes too. What is the difference between the third step which is a wax and the Gold Class wax that is so expensive? Should I apply the Gold class wax after the 3-step process, or is this just a waste of money.
