Are 4th and 5th gen ATs interchangeable?

Hello,

I am fixing up a 4th gen maxima with a dead transmission for a friend. I found a really good deal on a 5th gen automatic transmission, however I want to know if they really are interchangeable. I believe the 5th gen is still an RE4F04A, and IIRC the drive axles and bell housing are the same, but I'm not really sure on the electrical connections.

This is really a blast from the past from me, because I haven't worked with the AT since I converted mine to 5 speed.

Thanks,

The transmission will bolt right up, no problems with axles.

Where you will have a problem is with it shifting. The 5th gen transmission does have some internal changes and the transmission control modules are different because of it.

There is someone who did this swap a couple of months ago and he figured out the mods needed.

Here is the link to that.
