Changing head unit in a bose system

Can I replace just the head unit in a 97 with the Bose system? Will it sound like crap because of all the Bose "special" tuning crap and individual amp stuff?
I am happy with the sound a low-moderate volume but I want a newer headunit with newer features (like MP3).

It is possible. You will need a signal convertor if you plan on using the Bose amps. They run around $30-$40. You will lose some quality but hardly noticeable.

Plus if your like others the bug hits you and you replace amps/ and all the other speakers anyway

I like my bose, but it's rather clumsy looking. I could do with the space for the extra gauges though

If you are replacing the headunit, definately replace the speakers as well and run all new wiring. The Bose system isnt even close to providing a flat output (done on purpose), and its made even worse once those godforsaken adaptors are used.

Aftermarket ones.

No really there are many good brands and models. It all depends what you are looking for.

I'm no expert either but if you want some high end stuff get some MBQuart speakers or Alpine. Don't get Sony stuff.

Kenwood is ok. I have mixed emotions about it. I've had friends that swore by it and friends that had nothing but problems with it.

I don't really need top of the line stuff. But I do want stuff that is good quality. My friends have told me that Infinity kappa is really good. Plus they're not that expensive either. Whats the average cost for a new system?

The Kappa's are good too. I'm not sure what an average cost of a new system would run you with installation. Are you talking all new headunit speakers, amps and subs? If so I'd guess 1.5k - 2k.

I guess I'll have to do it piece by piece then instead of all at once.

Really sections at a time. Start with the headunit then if you are changing speakers run the wire all at one time. It will save you from having to rip open you interior everytime you want to change something.
