Removing Etching From Black Trim Pieces

Ya know that flexible black plastic coated trim alot of us have all over our cars?

See around all of the glass?

Here's a couple of photos of my windshield trim:

See those blotches?

That's not dirt or staining. It's hard-water/environmental etching in the plastic coating.

Anyone have any recommendations for removing the contaminants and restoring the trim?

I'm not necessarily a novice when it comes to detailing and restoration as I've restored a couple of older Ford trucks and have my own bag of tricks. I typically use a mild to moderate mix of muriatic acid and water to deal with etching in glass but this trim stuff is a quite soft plastic coating and I'm not thinking applying anything acidic would be a good idea.

Thoughts?

I have the same thing, but I would recommend painting it with a flat black/trim paint since it's ruined.
