I have recently discovered that when it rains very hard, my car leaks water from the front passenger handle on the roof, the front dome light where the sunroof is controlled, and the rear right passenger seatbelt. I was thinking of just taking silicone to these spots. Any advice? Thanks.

 

Seems like the drains to the sunroof are blocked somehow.or maybe you need a new seal.

Why not fix it right? Sunroof can be nice to have.

bumping - I have clear sunroof drains but had this problem on my passenger side recently (Austin got 14" of rain while car was parked at the airport). How do you remove the front headliner and what are the potential causes if the drains are clear (poured a small amount of water down each and can hear it drip out almost immediately on the front drains).

 

I would drop the headliner to do further inspection.

 

That is the plan. Anyone know what is the minimum that needs to be removed to just pull down headliner a little bit to inspect the drains? Visors, sunroof switch, handle? A Pillars?

 

Connection at headliner is fine, water drains, but I can't find where the passenger front drain terminates. My suspicion is there's dirt/leaves built up there that causes it to back up when rain is heavy. Looking from outside it looks like it drains into the pinch weld behind the wheel well. Anyone know if the drain is accessible?

Thanks Dennis. I removed the passenger plastic kick panel, and I found the drain hose behind an electronics box.

FYI: It snakes down into a hole under that area, so if you pull out to inspect, make sure you get it all the way down in there otherwise it will be leaking into the electronics area. I inspected 3 out of the 4 drain hose terminations and they all seemed totally clear, put vacuum on them as well. I suspect my leak is due to water getting past the sunroof drain tray. For example, if I brake hard while it's leaking, a stream of water will drip, rather than just a few drops, as if spilled from a container.

 

how did you drop the headliner? I believe the drainage pipe is not fully connected. I only need to drop it enough to get to the pipe connection.

 

I did not drop the whole thing, but if you remove the grab handle and the sunvisor+clip, you should be able to pull down enough to check if it is connected and connect it if so.

All just involve popping the covers off and a few Phillips screws. Visor removal requires undoing 1 electrical connector, make sure you pull it out enough to reconnect it.

 

And mine it is still leaking, was going to try to figure out how to completely seal it up this weekend.

 

Does anyone know if the sky view roof has drains??? When it rains I’m having a leak where my overhead lights are, my backseat, and on the floor behind the passenger seat

 

There's a gutter system incorporated into the sunroof mechanism that catches water under all the seams of the panel where it meets the roof. Then in the 4 corners there's a tube coming out of the gutter mechanism and plastic flexible pipes attach to the tubes to take the water to outlets under the car.

After dropping the headliner, I found one plastic flex pipe pulled off the tube. So I reinstalled it and then bought 4 hose clamps to make sure none ever slip off again. Real PITA job, but leaving it wet will surely ruin the inside and bring mold. So..... Just do it!

I have the skyview roof that’s mounted so I don’t know if it has a drain system that’s what I’m trying to find out so I know what to do???

 

You didn’t mention the year of your car but I can tell you that the 4th gen (95-99) Maxima did not come with a sky view roof. KP has given you the basics of how a sunroof drain system works along with pics. If you’re not satisfied with his advice, then I’d suggest asking the members who have actually owned your gen.

 

What the hell is a skyview roof? If it's aftermarket, you're on your own.

If it's factory option, it's either a Sunroof (metal panel) or Moonroof (glass panel) And the only difference is the panel. EVERYTHING ELSE IS EXACTLY THE SAME! Not sure why anything other would be assumed?

 

You need to be more clear with your term of "skyview roof". What vehicle are we talking about?
