passenger side CV boot question

Hello friends:

During my last oil change I noticed a small crack in what I believe is the CV boot. It is the one nearest the wheel. I searched for a sticky on the topic or other threads but didn't uncover too much in terms of a "how to" thread. I don't think I'm going to tackle this job but wanted to read up on what is involved for when I take the car to my trusted Nissan mechanic.

I assume both boots on the passenger side should probably be done at once since the axle has to be removed, right? Does anything else have to come off? - oil filter, drive belts, etc?

Thanks fellows!

You can get boot repair kits that I believe will go on without removal of the axle, but most people think they're not reliable. To replace the boot you do need to remove the axle. The only thing that comes off is the wheel and the steering knuckle, and on the passenger side you have to unbolt the carrier bearing housing.

There are a ton of threads on axle replacement on the forum. A couple minutes of searching will give you hours of reading enjoyment. These will get you started: -http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/553793-drive-axle-boot-hlep.html; http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...l#post8238150; http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ase-torn.html;

Hi all:

Thanks for the helpful information. I looked at the links and at least now I'll be more educated when I bring it to the shop.

I didn't realize, although now I guess it makes sense, that the MT fluid will pour out when the axle is removed. This was good to know since I was planning on changing the MT fluid before this repair.

Also, if the boot is not actually torn and there are no noises, will it be OK to just have them re-use the original OEM axle? If not, I'll have them use another OEM axle.

Thanks again.

If the axle is Truly OEM, I would definitely have it rebooted rather than reman or new aftermarket. Rebooting wil be much cheaper than new OEM, even when factoring in labor.

Something to also consider is the age and condition of the carrier/support bearing. It is not replaceble and if it feels gritty, wobbly or is loud the axle should be replaced.

If CV joint does not make clicking noise, just reboot it, it is much easier to do with axle out.

Thanks fellows! Yes, the axle is OEM as I'm the original owner. I have both passenger side CV boots on order with my Nissan dealer and I'm going to have a master tech I know there do the job. Other than all the MT fluid draining out and having my GL4 ready for him, are there any other parts that I might want to order so it doesn't end up getting stuck there for days waiting for parts?
