Differences in CAIs??

im in the process of purchasing a 97-99 se right now, and after reading through these forums every day for past few weeks, ive decided to go with the cattman y-pipe and either place racing cai or cattman cai as my first two mods, my question is: is there a difference between these two intakes?? ive searched and searched trying to find a definitive answer, but ive come up short everytime
Thanks,
Tom

Let me do you a big favor. Buy Warpspeed Y-pipe and CAI. They are the same product (if not better) than any other company, and thier prices are often half what thier competiters offer. They have possibly the best customer service anywhere in the Maxima community! Seriously, based on my experiences, I wouldnt think of going with any other y-pipe or CAI.

As an examply of Warpspeed's service, I bought a Y-Pipe Used from soemone on the org and needed some help with it.

I E-Mailed WSP, and they said they would cover all warranties on the Y-Pipe for me even thought it was a used piece.

And it fit perfectly. Cattmans are known for fitment issues.

I don't think Cattmans are bad, they're just more expensive. I have to agree that WSP do provide good service and offer good products also. As far as CAI goes, I have a Place Racing, but I think as long as it is Mandrel bent with the appropriate connections and K&N filter, you're good to go! WSP offers that! For the Y pipe, I got a Budget. I was not wowed by it but it grows on you. I kind of like it now. Fitment was good! it's not Mandrel bent, but you'll find the pipes don't have very tight bends in them anyway. The biggest thing is getting rid of those nasty precats ...that's where the flow helps ... be prepared to lose some power at the low end though.

Really? I seemed to gain power all around. It was the CAI that seemed to take away some low end. Well, a lot of low end actually. But the y-pipe made up for it, in my opinion.

I think you might have it the wrong way round. Y pipe should kill low end, because there's not enough backpressure at low revs. CAI should help low end since it helps pull more air in and make up for losses. If you don't believe me try loosening your bolts to the main CAT and see how much low end you really lose! I agree that overall there is a net gain.

I'm starting to wonder...

I put my y-pipe in about a month ago and my CAI about a week after that. I was coming home from a club on last saturday when my friend and I started flexing on the freeway. He has a 2001 Accord V6 sedan with K/N filter. I was ruining his night, roll after roll, steetlight after streetlight. I never really noticed a low-end loss, just gains pretty much all-around, especially after 3.5K. But, on the freeway I felt like the max started running out of breath. We got up to about 125-130mph, but since we would be cruising then all of a sudden punch it, I couldn't really gauge how the max was doing. Plus, he always seemed to cut it off after he floored it and I was playing inch-by-inch catch-up at higher speeds of 130+. But, I'm starting to wonder if there's something to this 'pop has better top' thing. Would it really make that much difference up there or not? Or was it just my 18"s, stereo equipment, extra battery, and beautifully thick 125lb girlfriend riding with me? I wish I had the kind of passing power at 120 that that skyline in the that one post has. Pretty scary.

None, I believe. I think Cattman buys theirs from Place Racing ... I could be wrong!

I think Cattman gives you different (better?) clamps, oterwise it is just a PR CAI.

yea, i kinda figured it was something insignificant like clamps, just wanted to make sure there were no major differences, such as different materials being used or different filters
Thanks for the help!

Does anyone know if warpspeed sells just the piping? I already have a cone filter that I could put on. Maybe it would save me some $$$ too.

I'm not sure if cattman's come in different colors, i think they do, but you have to ask

The CAI's power lies in a design featuring a long tube that delivers smooth, cool air from a filter mounted outside of the heated engine compartment, ahead of the fenderwell. Comes standard in black, silver, red, blue and yellow are available by special order for a $20 surcharge. Installation of the 1995-2001 CAIs requires 3.25" drill-mounted hole saw.

Plus, they're on sale for $199 plus $15 shipping.

Of course, if you've been on the forum, then you know to check out greg's stuff at www.custommaxima.com

Actually the Cattman's only come in black. They said ittakes to long to get them in any color. I called Place Racing and they said the same thing, it takes forever to get anything in color. It's funny since Cattman gets their intakes from Place racing, yet they charge less.
