Rear Lifting Question

All,
I read through a lot of the rear lifting threads here and I understand it's safe to lift both wheels using one lift spot in the middle of the rear. From a side view there's that rounded 1-2 inch-wide "beam" and a row of thinner metal on both sides running down the whole beam (not sure what that's called or for). Should I use the floor jack on the beam OR on both metal pieces to the sides of the beam? Sorry about the bad descriptions...My main concern is not bending/breaking anything since it's quite old and rusty back there.

Also, should I lift with the floor jack alone, or is it better to put a piece of 2X4 one foot or so long on the jack before lifting. Thanks

I've lifted the car with a floor jack under the center of that beam a number of times. No problems at all.

I realize now that what I considered the inner part is actually the rear sway bar, and the outer part is the actual beam, so I'll avoid jacking directly onto the sway bar itself and stick to the beam instead.
