Removing Catalytic Converter - Good idea or bad idea?

Hey guys,

I have a NZ-spec Maxima SMX and want to decat the exhaust. In New Zealand there are no emissions laws and it's completely legal to have a decatted exhaust as long as it meets the noise limits. Is it worth doing or should I install a high-flow cat?

Do you believe in global warming? Hasn't the weather down there been at there extremes? I think having no emissions law is just a tad outrageous.

Global warming is a hoax perpetrated by liberals to control people, nothing more, nothing less, so don't let anyone intimidate or guilt you into that reasoning. I don't know if you can pull the cat without other problems, that's why I clicked here myself. Hopefully someone can provide answers to the question. Without the politics in the answer. Good luck.

Jumping to the point here instead of throwing that global warming/epa crap since many people in the world are catless... No cat basically means it may help induce the raspy sound as if you removed the resonator, and you might get some black crap/soot on the bumper from the tail pipe. If you see a civic or any car with it dirty black by the pipe, you know they are catless. If you do decide to do this, get a o2 sensor extension socket that will screw into the existing port. This will help remove the possibility of CEL coming on. I have a hi-flow magnaflow cat, and it works good.

The plan was/is my mechanic was gonna weld a bung for the O2 sensor into the new piece of pipe. My biggest concern (other than it sounding raspy) is whether it's going to have a positive effect on performance.

I can't speak from personal experience as I have always had a stock exhaust but from what I can gather from years of info gathering here on the org is that removing your cat doesn't improve hp enough to warrant spending the money to do so when 1. You are hurting the environment (yes global warming is real, deal with it ) and 2. The money spent from buying a high Flow cat or labor to remove the existing cat, could be spent towards a Y PIPE which has been proven to give the most gains in hp (10-15) from altering the stock system.

Probably won't affect performance much unless your old cat was plugged.

As Realitycheck mentioned, a work-around might be required to keep the cel light happy.

I'll leave the environment issues of one car, on an island in the south pacific 1500 miles from Australia up to the owner of that car.

I agree, it will likely be a waste of time/effort.

Also, keep in mind the smell of unburned fuel... You may or may not like that.
