It probably wont make much of a difference. Why dont you just get a straight pipe and cut up the old cat to place around it and make it look like you have a cat? heheh. Just a stupid thought

Illegal - so if he gets caught could get an EPA fine.

Exactly. The damage and risk it runs isnt really worth it. Plus wouldnt it make him more prone to backfiring? He already complained about it in one post after his y pipe install. This couldnt help that problem much.

Re: what?

If you want more flow, just get a Random Tech. Cat. How much would an EPA fine be anyways?

The cost isnt the point, its the fact that your killing huan with that smog, so in the end the fine is your life! Plus the gains arent enough to out weight the cons, as explained by med before! oh and on a side note, I think they might have to impound your car if they find no cat, cause they dont want that thing runnign around.

Why is a catback and Y pipe fine but once you mess with the cat it ups the pollution so much?

According to Webster. catalytic converter-a chemical filter connected to the exhaust system of an automotive vehicle and designed to react with the fumes, so as to reduce air pollution.

That's pretty much it. I think how it works is that there is a honey-comb like structure inside the cat with lots of air spaces to provide a very large surface area to allow the platinum coating to react with the exhaust. I don't know what it turns into what (prob some hydrocarbon stuff and carbon monoxide). The y-pipe has even more of theses things called pre-cats, but that's mainly for cold startup. I don't think there are any of these devices in the b-pipe and the muffler (the cat-back system). That's prob why the y-pipe and the cat are so expensive from nissan because they have these in them (nissan y-pipe is 1020.23 for 98-99 and cat is 914.71 for 97-99) Hope this helps!

Oh, by the way, there is a group deal going for Random Technology Catalytic Converters for $144 with 10+ people. As of right now we have seven. Only three more are needed.
